Liverpool thread 2020/21

It’s funny really, last season I was resigned to the fact that Liverpool would be title challengers for the next few years if not longer.

But hindsight is a wonderful thing, and I now think they’ve truly bottled it.

They threw absolutely everything towards last season’s title and the UCL before that. Purposefully disregarding cups, spending hundreds of millions on players in their prime (despite age and limited resale value), flogging the same XI for two seasons, and completely failing to plan for the future, instead buying players like Origi and Minamino, and keeping an injured Ox on the sidelines.

Add to that: everything their fan base did to edge them over the line (e.g. bus wrecking), the sickening media support, the compulsive diving, the VAR decisions, COVID, hacking, and sheer luck.

And what do you get? In all their short sighted desperation, something that increasingly looks like a one-off PL title. Not the sort of domestic dominance they’d want you to believe.
You reap what you sow, long may the decline continue. The vilest club in the Uk by a distance supporters, players, manager and owner included

This is an incredibly nerdy post but when I read about Klopp's high intensity style and the injuries it causes, it reminds me of this magical girl anime I saw a while back called Yuna Yuki is a Hero. The characters have this power-up called Mankai (which means full 'bloom', there's a lot of flower motifs) which is like a kind of super mode, and they have to fill up a gauge to use it, but it comes with a price. They get this power from a magic tree called the Shinju, and in return, they have to sacrifice a bodily function (which is called 'Sange', or 'falling flowers') to the Shinju every time they tap into that superpower. In the main group, the heroine loses her sense of taste, one girl goes partially blind, one girl who's been around a bit longer is in a wheelchair and is partially deaf, one girl loses her voice, one girl goes blind, deaf AND is unable to use two of her limbs, and one girl has Mankai'd so many times she's a cripple who's in bed 24/7.

That's basically what happened to Liverpool. They pushed their bodies to the absolute limit and played a very intense style of football, and now it looks like they're paying for it, physically and mentally. And I'm not familiar with the Bundesliga but a lot of you have said that Klopp did the EXACT same thing at Dortmund and it ended up wrecking the team.

Oh dear. Wijnaldum says Liverpool "cannot play the victims". Doesn't he know their 'istree? Death threats incoming.

I think the very moment it all changed was when Scholes got sent off. It was where it felt like they’d got desperate and had ran out of ideas and they’d seen their arse about it knowing they were second best.

That very moment in time you could feel it in the stands that it was a monumental shift in football history.

I remember it well...

...and the almighty hangover the next day!!
