Sorry I’m replying a bit late to this, but I felt I had to.
The small union flag would be known as the Jack if flown from a
short Jackstaff.
But would be known as the Ensign when flown as in full size from the main mast, both at sea (as in jackstaff on the bow and the ensign flown at the stern) and on land where the ensign would be flown from the main pole (the largest) and a jack flown on the short pole.

So yes the union flag can be called a jack as well as the ensign.
