Probably because geography is no longer about where somewhere is on a map and hasn't been for over 30 years that I know of.
Gone have the days of teaching things that are potentially of some use in later life. The geography of today is all about regional climates, politics, land, farming, crop rotation etc. A question on my geography GCSE was describe a typical hill sheep farm. My answer, 'a typical hill sheep farm is located on a hill, surprisingly enough'.
I failed!
That reminds me of these birthday cards

There was a university student on tipping point this week who was studying Geography and was in her final year. When asked which sea did the RHINE empty into - Baltic, North Sea or Mediterranean - she replied “I have never heard of the RHINE so this will be a guess”.

I find myself shouting at the TV at the basic lack of general knowledge by people who are prepared to make themselves look complete idiots in front of the whole nation.
AAAAAAAAARGH! Why go on TV if you don't know basic shit like that? The Rhine is a pretty big river.
