The Manchester Ship Canal was built so that ocean going ships could sail straight into the city.
This was to stop those "loveable rogues" from helping themselves to goods during trans shipment.

It was more to do with the greedy Scouse transport businesses charging ridiculous prices to move the goods that arrived in Liverpool to Manchester. We felt it was common sense if we had the goods come straight to us, cut out the greedy Scouse middlemen.

I think your both right, dock charges as well as transport charges were seen as too high and so could both be bypassed, but I have read that there was also considerable “wastage” of goods by those cheeky scousers who worked (I know, I know) on the docks.

Looking forward to the Echo doing at least 2 articles every day about Newcastle United, and how their takeover by the Saudis is effecting Liverpool FC on and off the pitch.

I was watching Sunrise, Sky News, on Thursday morning. They had two journalists on, 1 was the political journalist for the Liverpool Echo, and they were discussing the Newcastle United takeover. You can image the absolute guff he was coming out with. When was the last time Sky News had the political journalist from the Liverpool Echo on? Exactly.

Personally I dont really see any real problems with what has happened at Newcastle. I think if I had a problem with that, then as has been rightly pointed out, you could find problems in any club in some way.

If you start getting holier than thou with regard to sport then shouldnt you take it further? Stop buying anythign made in China due to their human rights record...anything made in UK due to our long standing benefit from slavery....where do you stop?
As I have said about us trying to compete with City/Chelsea I only hope the addition of, what will undoubtedly become a big spending club, will make FSG get off their arses and open their wallets
