Mane is leaving because Bayern are paying him about 100k more a week plus Liverpool do this money ball shit and they think a new contract of 3 years on a 30 year old on 300k a week what Bayern a paying is bad for business! Which is total rubbish mane could play at a top level for at least 3 more seasons and then they could sell him for at least 10/15m

Think their moneyball approach is slowly falling apart

The whole process is about getting underpriced players then selling for a profit....but since COVID most of the top clubs are being more careful with transfers, they aren't getting the fees they used to get for players the level of Solanke/Brewster/Ibe etc.

Also now their top players are all entering their prime but with limited time on deals, they know how much benefit there is to leave on free transfers and clubs are more likely to hold out for a free even if it takes a year

They are going to have to spend BIG to replace a player as influential as Salah....and tbf they have a huge gaping hole in their midfield 3 between Thiago and Fabinho, the drop off is huge after those two...and they are both sick notes

They won't get Bellingham on moneyball wages, they won't get Mbappe on moneyball wages....they will need to break their structure and once that happens all other first teamers they have will want contracts to reflect that

Even jota I think was fair price, £45mil he's got goals but he's not that GOOD....they won't be getting another Salah, Mane for £30/35mil again

Low resale value, one year left on his contract so Liverpool couldn't hold firm.

Who would buy him if not Bayern?

Once you take into account his wage demands it becomes too much of a financial risk for most.

No potential buyers in Spain, Italy or France.

Even China doesn't spend big money on transfers anymore.

Liverpool don't so Moneyball at all. It was about identifying players who were considered hugely undervalued because the conventional wisdom used to assess baseball players was wrong.

Just about every successful player in Liverpool's squad was highly rated, and very expensive. At £10m Robertson is probably the nearest to a "low cost" underrated player that they've signed.

I reckon you can count Salah. I know he wasn't exactly cheap, but if you looked at his stats in Italy, no-one could have predicted that he would become one of the best goalscorers in the world.

Yep, there's also the fact that when they bought most of their bargain players, they were a top 6-8 team, not a title challenger. That lets you get a few more bargains. It's not a massive surprise that once they started to challenge for things and win things, the prices they had to pay to get players went up. If a top team wants a player, they automatically add 30% onto the price. After all, if Liverpool or City want someone, they must be class.

He was their club record fee of £43m at the time.

He's a great player, but not sure he went from obscurity to one the best.

His first season was a record breaker at Liverpool, but overall (once you take off penalties, which he didn't take at Roma) his goal scoring is similar to his last season at Roma. He was also one of the top players at a Roma side that finished 2nd and 3rd in Serie A while he was there - he was even their player of the year in his first season.

Even with penalties, this is a player who scores once every 133 minutes for Liverpool. For comparison, Aguero's record at City was a goal ever 107 minutes.
