Jurgen Klopp has basically been performing a genius football experiment on Darwin Nunez for last 18 months.
Nunez has natural shooting ability and blistering raw pace. I thought Klopp wanted this unpredictable rawness to the break low blocks we faced in 2022, including in the UCL final. But Klopp had something else in mind - he wanted to curb Nunez's natural pace and power, and make him into a controlled aggressive player. And that transition made Nunez look confused, slow and nervous in front of goal last 18 months. Plus he had bad luck with crossbars/posts and good saves by GKs. I was critical of Klopp for all this. But Klopp kept pushing, and now in the last 4 weeks we have seen an efficient and effective Nunez. And he still looks dangerous even though his sizzle has been cut down by Klopp. At this rate, he may become among top 5 players in the world in 2 years and 80 million will look like a bargain. We might be seeing the successful conclusion of another genius J. Klopp experiment.
