Liz Truss

In ‘97 Blair, Brown, Cunningham, Cook, Blunkett et al, looked ready for government. Starmer has a lot to do to gain the same electoral confidence.
On the flip side, Major’s government weren’t quite the same shit show as the Johnson (and presumably Truss) administrations were/will be. Probably evens things out overall. After 2019 I thought it’d be a long time before we saw a non-Tory government. Now it feels far more likely.

Could she do both at the same time though? I suspect not.
A very astute comment and fair question - the jury's out on that one.
This coming Friday could be a first Black Friday after the Chancellor's statement. I know they mean well with their tax cutting strategy, but, with the best will in the world, I fear that their policies will immediately come under attack from international investors who will desert the pound, and if it doesn't plummet from it's present 40 year low, I'll be amazed.
She may be 'found out' very, very quickly.
We'll soon see.

When she was reading her lesson at Westminster Cathedral today, I didn't think it had any sort of gravitas. Frankly, it was a piss poor delivery, and wasn't a good look for our new PM.

I don't know now where I read it, but I saw a comment earlier on it was like watching an alien trying to be a human, but not quite getting it.

I saw a replay of her a while ago, and what a great description that was.

Like your post but was left wondering why the tax cuts and the lack of a continued windfall tax may have the opposite effect to what was intended?

What is it that those investors might be looking for?

As far as I can tell, Truss seems to be peddling a whacked-out, superannuated, Friedmanesque approach to things.

It’s hard to believe that in the year 2022, any country is still in thrall to the Washington consensus. In the extremity of its divisions and the militancy of its commitment to deregulated free markets, the USA is now pretty much a singularity, a model that no-one wishes to emulate.

Except for Truss.

And what is America renowned for these days? Economic inequality, a lack of social cohesiveness, excessive levels of crime and incarceration, racial and ethnic conflict, and family and community breakdown, none of which any other West European country would tolerate.

Except maybe for us.

Thats a fairly good description of where we are today.
