Today is the day
The first day of hell.......how much more damage is this country going to inflict on itself?
This is great
But if she goes, her successor will be voted for by the clowns that voted for Truss (and bloody Johnson) in the first place. - Is there any chance these party members will be offered a reasonable choice when the Tory MPs put up another couple of candidates?Doubt she’ll risk calling an election, but things are going to get so bad soon that she’s fucked. She doesn’t have the nous, intelligence or charisma (or even parliamentary party support) to ride out this crisis.
C'mon now. There's not one in the whole party. Is there any chance these party members will be offered a reasonable choice when the Tory MPs put up another couple of candidates?
Sadly I would suggest we've been without effective government for considerably longer than 2-3 monthsBut if she goes, her successor will be voted for by the clowns that voted for Truss (and bloody Johnson) in the first place. - Is there any chance these party members will be offered a reasonable choice when the Tory MPs put up another couple of candidates?
I'm not doubting she'll be a lame duck PM. But it's possible the party will stick with her rather than risk another two or three month spell without effective government.
You are right to be concerned. She is as hard right in her views as it gets, and has made no secret of her beliefs the ordinary working person is recieving benefits they don't deserve. A cull of those rights, like paid holidays, maternity leave, employment protections and environmental standards are to be reveiwed. She has said it herself.
It is widely predicted that Theresa Coffee will become our new Health Secretary, as she has already been briefed by senior civil servants on the problems the NHS is facing. Given her inhumane track record as Minister at the DWP, and legislation now passing through Parliament that will disolve the Government from their responsibilty for providing free at source health care, the NHS as we know it is under threat.
That all plays into the Truss playbook there is too much state intervention ( Welfare ) in peoples lives, and at a time when the economy is shrinking, she has promised tax cuts for all, but primarily for the wealthiest members of society.
We should expect an even greater reduction in public services as a result. She is a woman with no conviction about improving the lot of the ordinary person and is probably the lap dog the ERG, the extereme right wing cabal of the tory party that have seen off 3 Prime Ministers in 6 years, have always wanted, as her views and theirs chime with each other.
We have also, as a democracy, seen the collapse of debate in the House of Commons. Over recent years, the abuse of Statutary Instruments has resulted in individual ministers putting clauses into bills after due process in both houses.
Liz Truss supports those actions, which goes against the time old principle of Parliament being the legislature, and Government being the executive. In other words, the Goverment decides what is on the agenda, and Parliament debates then votes accordingly.
We should all be very concerned about what is happening, not only with Liz Truss promising economic measures that will be a disaster for the country, but also with the collapse of centuries old traditions of democracy in Westminster.
