Loaded firestick

Had a firestick for 3 years now.
Watch all the UK shows from the US and don't even know what a VPN is or what it does

Without a VPN you can get "seen" by your Internet provider/Government body/Police looking at the dodgy content.

And depending on the software you have on the stick it could mean all the copywrite holders can see you doing it too and can get you done for it.

in terms of legalities. imagine a drug dealer was selling coke and each pouch having there phone number in it. they may not be found out for a while but the it just takes one look and they are found.

A VPN hides the phone number in effect. Odds are you will be fine. its just a layer of protection.

It reroutes your connection to a server that disguises your location and encrypts your signal.

There are many more intricacies in the description of a VPN but think of it as a running from a Bear analogy, you only have to run faster than the slowest person to escape being eaten by said Bear.

People without a VPN have more chance of being eaten.
Thanks.
So I came.over in December and gave my fire stick to my daughter and bought a new one back here in Florida.
How does my daughter get a VPN onto her stick (and how much is it?)

Thanks.

I use airvpn on 8 devices for one price, it might not be the best (It's all subjective) but it has done me very well for 4 years and counting, it's easy to use has an android and apple app as well as linux and windows downloads it even has a dedicated Amazon Fire app.

£6 a month a bit less if you put in the voucher codes, I just let it roll it's not worth the hassle. I know other people use perfectly good VPN's that have served them well but this is the one I vouch for because it's what I use.

If you need any help setting it up just send me a PM or give me a shout on the board mate.

So basically are you saying I flick the firestick on go into my iptv app watch a football match and they know what your watching or see what your watching ? If I’ve got that right how is that even possible ?

It’s useful to hide a UK location to ensure your football on the dodgy box doesn’t suffer as Sky and TNT are doing their best to shut down streams, mine is set to Luxembourg, you’re ok being in the US but it’s always useful to have

Since changing to sky Internet my streams have never worked better.

I would use a VPN always, lots of UK ISPs will throttle your connection otherwise. I use surfshark but any will do.

Same here, got a 2 year deal with Surfshark, it's been pretty reliable, is easy to set up on the Firestick and once turned on, it's on until you turn it off (which you might need for iPlayer, ITVx etc).

Also works on all your other devices like Android, PC's and Tablets.

Think of it like shagging with a condom, it's a pain to first put on, but saves unwanted accidents (or the authorities knocking on your door)

What actually is it? I mean if you buy a VPN what do you physically have in your hands?

Lots of analogies, but here's one that might help....

If you wanted to rob a bank, would you wear a mask (VPN) or not?

Much harder to track you down if you've disguised yourself and that is what a VPN does, it disguises your home address (in the Internet world that is your IP address - every device that connects has one)

VPNs can also give you extra speed.
I use Surfshark and my usual download with Vodafone is around 75mbs but with Surfshark it’s almost twice as fast At 145mbs.

interesting. This makes no sense to be honest. A VPN just encrypts the traffic from your device to the ISP. You’re still bound by the ISP speeds.

Maybe the VPN gets that speed through to the speed checker but you will still be limited to the speed of the ISP. Unless the ISP is throttling by some odd IP system that the VPN hides but it will be odd

I was always under the impression that a vpn would, if anything, reduce your speed.

On the subject of firesticks. I watch all the football through the fubu app on a firestick.
I share my details with my Mum who watches through the fubu app on her smart t.v without a firestick.
My stream is always around 30s delayed compared to hers.

They can if they are looking.

Trying to layman terms this without diagrams isn’t the easiest.

Your fire stick connects to your router. Your router connect’s to your supplier ( by/sky/etc)

Your supplier can and will take a record of every site visited from your router. It knows what you look at as it is the one actually making the connection to the “download site” and is returning the data to your router.

All they need to know is a list of dodgy download sites and they will immediately know you have been looking at them.

A VPN in effect replaces the provider as what connects to the “download site” so all sky/bt etc know is you connected to a VPN. They have no view of what sites you look at.

Lots of pay for VPN’s operate a “no logging” policy so even if the authorities ask what you have been looking at they have nothing to provide.

I had one but it slowed things down (and the BBC figured out I was using a firestick Hahaha) binned it in the end. I also think they install spyware on your system. Never had one since.
