Lou Reed

Oh and "Songs for Drella" which he made with John Cale. A real beauty.

Can't disagree, but as a starting point? Started with Transformer and went backwards. Next thread

yeah Sweet Jane, specially that extended intro. Class.

Transformer is a brilliantly complete and diverse piece of work.
Rock and Roll Animal is great live album, much heavier - a proper good racket.
great version of sweet jane on there

Where do you start with Lou Reed?

The Studio albums:
Transformer
Berlin (there's also a recent live performance at St Anns Warehouse)
Street Hassle
New York

There's also the live albums:
Live Take No Prisoners is probably the pick of the bunch.
Berlin at St Anns Warehouse (see above)

Then there's the stuff he did with others:
Velvet Underground & Nico
Songs for Drella - his and John Cale's tribute to Andy Warhol.

As above ^^^^^
Try "Coney Island Baby" and his 80s classic "New York" which is pure quality.

If you're not familiar with The Velvet Underground, check them first.
Absolute genius.
Agree totally!------talk about influential bands!

Yes Transformer's his most recognised album, but to come out with an album like "New York" or even "Magic and loss" so many years after is hardly going backwards.

No one's mentioned "Metal machine music" yet. I bet nobody's got a copy of it either.

The best version of Sweeet Jane is on Live Take No Prisoners. The performance is excellent but Lou's intro and the little rant he does in the middle ("Fuck here and her little people. I like big people. People from Wyoming") is just outstanding.

not heard that version

I busked in Paris in 93 with a few mates and we always got more cash from:
"Sweet Jane", "Rock n Roll", "Waiting for my man" and "Stephanie Says" than for any other of our ramshackle versions of Nirvana, Doors, Clash, Neil Young, Costello tunes. We even did "Fight the power" which was appallingly bad and ""Justify my love" by Madonna which just involved clapping and talking.

Anyway. Yes Lou Reed top man.
