They've given travel opportunities to many people who might otherwise be unable to afford them. Yes, you're treated a bit like cattle and milked at every given opportunity, but then what do you expect for such cheap flights? I mean, it's cheaper than going by train a lot of the time.
I've flown with many airlines, from Ryanair on one end of the spectrum to Singapore Airlines at the other. I'm 6"3, I barely get any leg room in economy whichever I fly with, so it makes no difference to me which airline it is. Food's always crap, even with the top airlines, so I always bring my own.
Honestly, I think the shit that Ryanair and other budget airlines get is really just snobbery. Read the small print, do exactly what it says and you won't get stung. Simple as that.
