Snap their hands off. Replacement for Puyol due to hair.

EXCLUSIVE: Luiz raid! Barcelona to bid £35m for Chelsea defender

Chelsea will have to fight to keep David Luiz this summer, with Barcelona preparing to offer £35million for the Brazil defender.

The Catalan club have long been admirers of the 24-year-old centre half, dating back to when he was impressing at Benfica. In 2010 he was player of the year in the Portuguese League.
Wanted: Barcelona are preparing to offer £35m for David Luiz

Barcelona see Luiz as a long-term replacement for Carles Puyol, 34 next month and increasingly injury-prone.

Coach Pep Guardiola has regularly been forced to turn to Javier Mascherano as a makeshift centre half, and he impressed there during their successful Champions League campaign last season.

Luiz, who joined Chelsea in January last year for £21m, is seen by Barcelona as a player whose style would suit them perfectly, especially alongside Gerard Pique, and they will make every attempt to lure him away this summer.

Chelsea are sure to resist Barcelona's advances. The frizzy-haired defender is a favourite with the Stamford Bridge crowd and has hit back at criticism over his defending this season with an impressive run of form.

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville famously described him as playing as if he was 'controlled by a 10-year-old in the crowd on a PlayStation'.

But Luiz's performance in the Champions League victory over Napoli last week was considered to be his best in a Chelsea shirt.

Owner Roman Abramovich may also refuse to sell, given that skipper John Terry is 31 and troubled more and more by injury.

Terry missed Wednesday's defeat at Manchester City with a calf injury but looks set to return at home to Tottenham on Saturday.

I call bullshit! They didn't even pay that for Fabregas!!

I sincerely doubt they would have any interest in such a loose canon. Can be great, but also totally piss-poor.

Bacelona would, or should, search for someone like... well someone like Kompany. But he's untouchable. Right?

I don't know, but when I think about Barcelona and their central defenders, I think of composure, discipline and concentration. None of which I believe are Luiz's greatest features.

I think there's a great player in him somewhere and he could be brilliant for Barca but at £35 million it seems far fetched to say the least

I agree

Under the right manager and guidance i think he could be a great player.

I was a little disappointed when City didn't pursue there interest in him as i thought alongside Kompany we could've had the best defensive pairing for many years to come.

I thought he was excellent against us on Wednesday, Chelsea's best player by a mile. Has a great awareness when on the ball, his passing is crisp and offensive (like his hair, couldn't resist). He is prone to mistakes at the moment but i think that is because he has so much belief and ability. With a bit more experience could be the real deal.

Kompany used to get invited to play friendlies in barcelona when he was 16-17y old.

In the end they didn't want him after all. What a mistake! :O

Thiago Silva is their true defensive target but it'll involve all the usual malarkey with Milan to get it done.

For 35m they could have Javi Martinez and have him as CB or back up to Buscuets and sell Keita.

Athletic,brave and technically brilliant.

I think only his occasional 'over enthusiasm' and inexperience are holding him back.He has improved enormously since arriving, chavs MOTM on Wed,and, with another 12 months under his belt,he will be fantastic.

Completely agree with you. THE most adventerous CB in the league.

Like I have said a bunch of times this year, even considering his mistake, he is still Chelsea's best defender and a top 5 Centerback in the league right now. In 2 years he will be neck and neck with Kompany as the 2 absolute best CDs in the league. His upside is gargantuan, and if Barca buys him, he'd be perfect. Coz he is actually a bundle of talent.

Speed, ball skill, athleticm, vision, and positioning... His only shortcoming is a seldom penchant for being overaggressive. Something that has been blown way out of proportion.

Top 5 CD in the league right now. Destined to be top 2 in a year. We should have gone for him.

I could see Luiz fitting in well with Barcelona but not partnered with Pique. They both need to have a more sensible, experienced and disciplined defender next to them, like Puyol and Terry. Can't see it happening anyway.

David luiz? Positioning? Do you people watch him for fuck sakes? One person says he's class and the rest follow. He's fucking shit. Literally a useless CB. In the 8 or 9 Chelsea games I have watched this year he's by far their orst defender. Give me Ivanovic everyday. Luiz is truly horrible. No awareness, positioning, to erratic. More useful as a striker ffs.
