Lyon CL QF Post-Match Thread

Over a season you finish where you deserve to. New coach comes in, players work harder to impress = honeymoon period. No team finishes in a false position. They finished 7th in a mediocre league. All teams have injuries.

Apparently we just lost against one the best teams out there. We should be proud we managed to score against a team that finished 7th in a farmers league because they had two players with long-term injuries. Why didn’t Pep come out and say we were the true underdogs in this matchup?

I still can’t fathom last night’s team. I don’t understand why Pep fears the opposition so much. Even still if we go 3-5-2 play Walker in the back 3 and Cancelo and Mendy wide. Fernandinho steps into midfield so no need for both Gundogan and Rodri so Rodri plays with Bernardo’s energy beside him.

Instead we have no pace in the back 3, 2 slow holding midfielders, our best full back playing as a wing back, our best wing back on the wrong side and our creator in chief isolated.

We lost this game and many others this season in the last transfer window.

We didn't buy a quick CB to replace Kompany and all of our goals conceded yesterday and the formation change were based on us having slow vulnerable centre backs.

I don't even believe buying Usain Bolt will rectify the type of goals we have conceded this season.

Kompany's pace had already gone and it was his sheer force of character and will to win that saw him and us through that 14-game title winning run-in.

The season beforehand, Stones and Otamendi were playing just as high and we dominated, yet came unstuck against the teams who can punish any shortcoming in Europe.

I firmly believe that good players can still be the wrong players.

Our constant inability to get close to making tackles in midfield and get back in, is leaving our defenders ever more exposed, due to Fernandinho being moved and ran into the ground.

Rodri and Gundo are a fundamental issue, they are never going to improve pace and teams are now just waiting for their chance to fly past them when the ball breaks down.

The elephant in the room is do we just tread water like this again until Pep decides if he is going to sign an extension at some point?

We can't move forward with real momentum again until the board know where they stand.

Or we sign someone like Messi!!

Well the morning after the night before, I have braved the usual suspects and surprisingly City arent quite getting the annihilation I expected. If anything there is a an air of disappointment, much as they hate us it kind of ends their interest in this seasons truncated CL, yes they can wax lyrical about Bayern but without an English contender it all seems a bit flat. I’m not going to retread the obvious fuck ups but I guess if we are going to fuck up at least its a competition where the prize money will probably be much reduced as there have been no sell out stadiums for the final stages.

I would find this much easier to deal with if we had set up in our normal way, did everything we normally do with the attacking brilliance at our disposal, creativity, pace, drawing Lyon out of their shape, Kevin in the middle, pinpoint balls for Raheem and Gab to run onto. If we lost (fairly) doing that, knowing we'd done everything in our power to win, I could deal with it.

Can you imagine Klopp changing his Mane, Salah, Firmino trio to go 3 at the back when they face Lyon?

Klopp has fast midfielders and fast defenders. We needed legs in midfield, Bernado, foden, Kevin to close down their final balls over the top.

No. How can you be this reductive.

If we lost Aguero, Laporte, Sterling, Walker, Bernardo & Ederson to injury and finished 7th, but they were all fit and firing again by the CL mini tournament, would we be the 7th best side in England when the tournament came around?

No. Of course we fucking wouldn't.
There you go again 'If this, if that'. You're assuming we lose all those players to injury and all the other big teams don't lose their equivalents. 'If' doesn't come into it. Lyon are 7th best in France. Finished 7th.

Didn’t understand why he completely changed things from how well we played against RM.

Why start Garcia if he wants to leave?

as much as I rate Gundo, Ferds and Rodri. All 3 together can’t play together and Ferds definitely showed his age last night.

2-2 if Rahem bagged that.

oh well, other than the mess around the 2nd goal can’t complain really.

better side beat us. Hope they win the thing now

He's right though. We're no where near the elite in the champions league.
But what I will say is we've only been in it for 10 years, teams in it longer than us haven't won it so I think time is on our side, kind of.
The fact that we've spent big somehow gives authority to the media to say we should have won it already which is bollocks in my eyes.

I'm sorry mate that doesn't make any sense

Sums up how I think and feel about it.

You can keep saying the same wrong thing over and over again, it doesn't make it true.

Very sorry but any team with Fernandinio, Rodri & Garcia as our back middle 3 is asking for punishment, even an average team in France took the piss with 3 easy goals, more pace in my grandparents than those 3

We have conceded those all fucking season, Ederson just doesnt look like saving anything in those situations either its all amateur stuff

Why oh why was Garcia anywhere near that squad? Why the fuck did we even try playing like that just to trial it for the Bayern game???

Its a big let down & Pep & the team deserve all the shit thrown at them & us fans

Very sorry but I still don't feel confident with Rodri as HM

Unless Laporte & Koulabily link up & we sign an out & out LB who can defend better than the tripe we currently have then forget about winning the League back its not going to happen

We now have players like Bernardo, Stones who imo would have been a better choice last night wanting out.

Bernardo must be gutted

Another noticeable problem last night out & out striker where do we go with this, im sick of hearing Jesus put the hard yards in & defends well when he's paid to fucking score goals on a regular basis nothing more sure we need to sort it out

Aguero won't be back firing till October time at least, it takes him all pre season & a few Prem games to get going so where do we go??

We are fucked till CB, LB, CF are bought imo

I get the anger and disappointment, losing big games will always hurt and its natural to blame somebody.
This bollocks about Pep having an ego or trying to be clever has to stop though. He picked the team that he thought would work best against a very good Lyon team and although on the night several players didn't turn up, had things gone for us we'd have won the game in spite of some poor performances.
Talk of sacking him is insane, the only people benefitting from that happening would be the rest of the football World.
Nows the time to stick together, brush ourselves off and get prepared for next season.
It's not been pleasant reading this forum over the last 12 hours. There are a few posters who should be fucking ashamed of themselves with their comments.

Well said. As I said on another thread, many supporters always want someone to blame and far too many think that sacking a manager or selling a player is the right response to a bad defeat.

That's not to say changes in playing personnel are not required: they are. This is a team in transition for one thing and also you should always be looking to replace your weakest links with stronger ones every summer.

Changing the manager is not the right choice at this point, backing him big time in the transfer market is the right move. You sign Pep as manager, you need to give him top quality players because that's what his system demands. He needs to stay and "rebuild" the team.

Stunned by that complete shit show last night that started at 7pm. Pathetic, inept showing in the biggest game of our season.

Not even angry, I expected this against Lyon. This team simply can't play against any half decent team who can park the bus and play on the counter.

And it's not all about the defence. DMs who have no idea how to stop a counterl, attack not clinical enough against defences where you don't get 20 chances.
100% correct I'm not alone when I say Rodri for me is still a big doubt againt better & quicker teams

Why do we play such a high defensive line when we have zero pace at CB or DM, the ball over the top or in between the FB and CB kills us every time against quick forwards, just can't understand why we play this way with the players we currently have. I know Pep likes to pen teams in but shouldn't we be dropping off and holding a deeper back line out of possession?
