Lyon (H) - Post Match Thread

No need to go overboard, we can't play well every game and I'd much rather a defeat come tonight than on Saturday but it does seem that if we change things from our prefered 11, we don't look quite at it, particularly going forward.

Gundogan offers nothing, I don't think Ive seen him have an influence on a game since the west brom game in the cup which must have been a year ago now. He never dominates, never makes a telling contribution, he's just another body in midfield, I can't understand how he gets a start when there's other options. He should be used almost exclusively as a means of preserving tired legs.

On a similar note, Jesus doesn't seem to contribute either, other than fantastic work rate I'm not sure what he gives the team half the time. He's not a striker that's going to score from nothing, he's not going to dribble past players and score a solo goal, he's not going to smash it in from outside the box, his link up play is decent enough but not spectacular and I think that sums him up at the minute, he's a player thats adequate at everything but great at nothing. He's only a kid and thats probably too overly critical of him but he needs to start showing more in games, show that he can be the difference when he's needed as right now if Sergio isn't playing , you're looking to sterling sane and the silva's for goals rather than jesus.

Baffling selection, lethargic display and deservedly beaten by what was in truth an average team. Bad day at the office but we move on to Cardiff where I fully expect a rampant response.

I can't get my head around that performance it was as if they had never played together before. I really wish we would stop trying to reinvent the wheel and just play our best players in the right positions the tinkering is driving me mad. I felt we should have brought Foden on because we seemed out of idea's maybe his energy and directness would have given us something different.

Some piss poor performances and team selection did the damage tonight, Walker being just one who could not get his passes where they were aimed, Sterling chose the wrong option half the time, Delph had a bit of a mare, in fact you could go through the team and no one shone, tonight was a game where Vinny could have steadied the defence and played the captains role to get the team moving, but its not the end of the world and it might just give a few players the kick up the bum they need to cut out the sloppy errors.

I fear that just like the last 2 times we won the league the club has gone and done it again and been complacent and not strengthened the team when they should have.

Trying to haggle over £5m and then not having a Plan B for Jorginho was ridiculous.
only time will tell but i do think Liverpool have the momentum and desire now more than us but i also see them coming unstuck with suspensions and fixture congestion in Jan/Feb,the plan B could come back to haunt us but i think we have a big enough squad to handle it

Dinho has far too many turnovers tonight. Hopefully that improves, because I’m not sure gundo would be a good option at cdm

My main concern isn’t losing tonight it’s the fact that dinho has played every game so far I think. It looks as if he’s strolling through games against limited opposition but it’s putting miles in his legs and come the business end of the season he’ll be struggling because we don’t have adequate cover.

In tougher games I’d sacrifice a bit of creativity and play delph alongside him to share the workload

I must have blinked

Wasn’t in the room when he made it was you? If you think we’re embarrassed by empty seats and lack of atmosphere you must be fucking pissed. I’m guessing you weren’t there?

Well don't read them then

Too late unfortunately. Be easier for us all if you stopped posting utter bollocks.

Now a four hour drive home oh joy. The desire was just not their tonight and but I think the players would never turned in that performance with Pep on the touch line. The lack of investment in key areas costing us as well. Need to get that hunger back. I moved my seat this year and what a mistake moaned all game and these are the regulars.

Fekir was brilliant. Thank goodness Liverpool played silly buggers with the fee.
On a similar subject, not spending an extra £5m on Jorginho is going to cost us a lot this season. Fern has definately lost a smidgen if pace but against a team like Lyon it is telling.

Awful night in many ways , shite team selection, shite attendance, shite atmosphere, shite attitude on the pitch , no hunger or desire , needs sorting urgently.

No use sticking the knife into individual players , i will use the player performance column for that :) Just a general malaise around the ground and the team tonight , nothing dropped for us in the penalty area , the ref gave us very little and Lyon pounced on our mistakes , just one of those nights and lets be honest since Pep arrived you can count performances like tonight on one hand. Annoying losing the game , but we have five more chances to put this right in the Champs league group stage , so not the end of the world.

Sometimes i feel Pep tries to be too smart with formations without any apparent reason. Why was Sane dropped I have no idea. It seems like not buying a midfielder is already appearing to be a mistake when everyone knew it should have been our priority this season.

And that in a nutshell is probably why we won't win this competition. If the fans don't give a fuck why the hell should the players

And that's not a criticism just the reality.

Liverpool do care about the competition and perform better in it than they do in the league.

The only thing is that Mansour wants to win it.

the fans are not on 250k per week the players are and that's why they should have the desire, 'me' well yes i gave tonight a miss as with ALL the chumps games, they are bent and corruption to the core, thanks but no thanks

The mentality just isn't there from the players and fans. We just don't have that belief, remember Pep touching on that

Only players should be blamed for this result, all eleven of them who played the first half. When Merlin is solid shit for 45 minutes, then something really went wrong on the night. I don't know if it is possible, but I would fine all of of them...and fine them heavily. If they wanted to show how pissed off they were, because Pep took their day off after the Saturday game, they've made the point tonight.

Surely this decides it. Bernardo is a central midfielder, not a winger.

Agree but I would put my house down on him starting in this position once again - very baffling.

People called it on the forum when the team sheet & formation was announced the balance didn't look right coupled with a poor & flat performance Lyon deserved to win tonight.

Got to give credit to Lyon & probably taken some tips off the Dippers on how to beat us by setting up traps high up the pitch & pounced on us when we either made miss placed passes or caught in possession.

Hopefully this result gives them a kick up the back side.
