Lyon (H) - Post Match Thread

Jorginho always look like to me as an upgrade on Gundogan an not on Fernandinho. Ferna's defensive skills, tackling is much better than Jorginho's, Napoli had a defensive midfielder playing behind Jorginho. Sarri playing him with Kante's immense defensive work helping him...

If we had got Jorginho in the summer imo he would have been playing a lot of games with Fernandinho not instead of him.

But the contrast between the Pool-PSG game and the City-Lyon game surprised me. I mean if this weekend PSG would play Lyon they would kill them 4-0 probably. Ad yet they still look very second best vs Liverpool they hardly deserved a draw which they nearly got.

Our work without the ball was awful basically all players failed to work really hard to get it back. And it cost us dearly they were able to put us under pressure our high line was tested few times, their speed to turn defence into attacks was very good and that is a weakness for City to defend against situations like that. Especially with mistakes like Delph made.

Even lesser PL teams can punish stupid and tactical mistakes like that but top teams of other leagues certainly will. Thats the CL.

Tactical discipline is highly important in CL imo and there is a lot to improve on that front for City. Pep said before this season he needs to be less nice to the squad, he needs to kick their ass sometimes to hold up the motivation and hunger maybe, well it has to happen now. Liverpool away game is coming up soon and its a much bigger test than Lyon was. We have a very bad run of results there its time to stand up and play well and get a result on their pitch. But we have to deliver in the games until that game too. Starting with ripping Cardiff apart...

The season hasn’t got going for me yet and I think that’s also what is subconsciously affecting the players. Everything’s a bit flat all round. We need to get our mojo back for the scouse game.

The best way to get our mojo back, is for Pep to go back to the same tactics (4-3-3) as last season and play with Sane/Aguero/Sterling as the front three.

Too much experimenting in the early games has caused this team to become slower and more hesitant.

Posted in the Gundogan thread that he has the highest loss ratio of any current squad player who has played 5 games or more. Not all on him but our level drops significantly when he's in the starting eleven.

We are continually told we have the best squad in the premier league, possibly europe, but once again, after winning the league last season we failed to strengthen in the right area's and be prepared to go again.

Gundogan is the weakest member of the squad, he doesn't offer a great deal creatively, he can't play the holding role, can't play wide as he has no pace. He isn't really a player we have a use for. He covers for no one and adds nothing different.

and Jesus is a worry, as he hasn't got any better since he signed, he's good at times, but no Sergio, who we'll need to replace sooner or later.

But our biggest problem is, and it's no secret Fernandino is getting older, he picks up suspensions, and will be unable to play every game this season, god help us if he gets injured, we have no cover for him what so ever.

We should have got proper cover for him, and seriously considered getting another striker. Riyad Mahrez was an expensive luxury we didn't need.

Our owner and the management team have done amazing things in the last 10 years, but we still make odd decisions.

Agree with all but Mahrez. Think he'll come good but not wide right.

Just seen a video of some ‘bother’* at the one stop. Can’t make out if it’s fans against the shop owner or rival fans?? Video ended pretty quick.

*throwing stuff at each other, then someone getting lamped out at the door before it miraculously all then calms down.

Bargain!!The match day scarf though don't you think:-)

Some shitty stat that was said
“A team that lost its first game in the CL, never went on to win the competition”
I fcuking hope we prove all those cnuts wrong.

IMO We were much too complacent from minute one. We couldn't cope with Lyon closing us down aggressively and pressing us so much throughout the game. We were slow and ponderous. The final score could have been worse. If we play like that against the dippers they are going to take us apart. We need a lot more energy throughout the whole team. Hopefully Pep will use this performance to kick ass and get much more intensity from the whole team.

Pep needs to wake the team up - 3rd in league table and 4th in Group stages and the best team we have faced so far is Lyon which has around 50% record in a one team league.

Is it is the second year syndrome? Every time we win the league, we had poor transfer market and poor performance. It is too early to judge, and I thought this year could be exceptional, but yesterday's performance makes me worry.

I think the real test will be when we face Liverpool in the Anfield.

3rd in the league due purely to the ref at Wolves and Scouse-loving refs elsewhere. And 4th is hardly in CL is hardly meaningful after 1 game. Our players were most affected by the WC plus throw in KDB injury (huge), Danilo (more significant than people realize as no rotation for Walker and Fernandinho). If we beat Cardiff on Sat, I will be quite ok with the start we have made. Which is not to say Lyon wasnt a shocker - we were truly crap, but I dont think we will be that bad again this season.

Havent hit form but you can see it will come. Love the attitude of the players within this team, both in defeat or triumph. Very different to the nasri, yaya days. I am expecting a quick recovery and win this weekend.

Some fair comments there - but please stop being obsessed with the dippers ffs. We've all got 33 games left in PL, numerous games in both cups and many games to play in the CL. Stop buying into the media hype and concentrate on your own club - you'll sleep a lot better at night for it...guaranteed.

Good post, if only for the sweet taste of positivity!

I can’t see it. If Fernandinho and/or Aguero go down injured around March time that will be us

Our midfield was seriously lacking some youthful vitality. Foden needs to be given a chance in one of the forward midfield roles, rotating with the two Silvas, and maybe Mahrez.

Gundogon needs to be regularly rotating with Fernandinho in just the holding role, nothing else. I'd also give Zinchenko a go in the holding role for the Carabao Cup.

I think the one thing Foden would give is is energy. Not sure Cardiff is the ideal game for
him to start but do think he deserves a start soon.
