Lyon travel plans

I did Paris in November 2017 and had to do 48 hours minimum just to make it comfortable. Manchester - CDG Airport, GDN, food stop then the metro to my hotel etc. Beer in the evening then up for the match the next day. Ditto Dublin in October.

Three nights for longer trips. I appreciate it’s not always possible but 24 hours must be a killer.

It is.

Almost everyone was asleep on the plane coming back.

I would do Thomas Cook again if they did a 1 night stay, but not a 24 hour trip.

Saying that, the plane was full, so there will always be plenty of City fans that want to do it.

There are a lot of people who struggle with time off work and could not do 2 or 3 days, also if the match is in a city that is not easy to get to then a direct Tommy Cooks flight is often better than a long trek round european airports. I have just done the trip vis A.dam and Paris( coming back) and that was tiring as well. After the cops held us back we left the stadium at 12 and did not get into the centre until 1am. I did not get to my hotel until 2am,...without a drink !!! so those on TC will be virtually landing by then and had gained little by staying over. Not that I am complaining, had a great time.

I couldn’t get any time off work. Used my 2 day’s off work. Working 5 day’s on the run now.

We didn’t get back until about 2.45am. Flight was delayed. Paperwork issues. The the plane circled Manchester for a good 15 minutes before landing. Got home about 3.30am. In bed by 4am.

Bumped into the real Ronaldo at Geneva Airport last night and had a brief chat. Worth the long day's travel just for that.

Great trip overall. Did the train and Eurostar which for me was less hassle than getting 2 flights. Lyon’s a nice city but I think a fair few fans were caught out by the size of the place and left it a bit too late getting to the ground. We timed it pretty much spot on but still had a good half hour walk from where everyone was drinking to near Part-Dieu station where they’d laid on free trams to the stadium. Was funny as fuck when we got off. The Gendarmes gave half a dozen of us an escort of about 50 yards to the bit that led to our section.
The stadium was better than I expected and the atmosphere was jumping but it helps when their capos at both ends of the ground are mic’d up to the stadium tannoy system. They even had their own little stage at the front of the stand to get the chants going from.
Like others, we were fucked when we finally got dropped off back in the city centre. Normally I’d be ready to go again for a couple of hours or so but really couldn’t be arsed. Sank a fair few on the way back yesterday though.

Like you say bigger than I expected but a rail card is your friend, just at the airport heading home

I hope you don't think I was having a go, I wasn't. I think both options are good and have done Tommys quite a few times as I would have recovered by yesterday afternoon, as it is ...........

I did the Eurostar option, staying in Camden after the West Ham game, and then arriving in Lyon on the Sunday afternoon.

Enjoyed the trip, although Lyon was relatively bland, and it shouldn’t take almost two hours from the Final Whistle to finally reaching your accommodation.

It’s strange how we can be trusted in Hoffenheim and Basel, yet locked in the stadium (supposedly for our own safety) in other parts of Europe.

Surely, if we can sup all day without any sign of nastiness, then why can’t we be bussed to the same bars with the Riot Police keeping a close eye on processing’s if necessary?

One final point:

My 13:30 Lille-St Pancras connection was cancelled, so I had to wait for the 14:15, which arrived at St Pancras around 3pm (UK time)

At the time, it didn’t seem a major problem, but like many other City fans, my Euston-Stockport “Off Peak” Return was now invalid until 7pn.

I was advised to go to the Virgin Ticket Office, whereby I was greeted with a loud female scouse accent at the Information desk:

“What do you want?”

I was momentarily lost for words, but then she confided: “Only joking love. I saw your Man City top and couldn’t resist"

Thankfully, there was a happy outcome, which for both our sakes, was probably a good thing.
