Macbooks

The inverse snobbery which posts like that exhibit makes me laugh...;- ) I'm a Mac owner. Spent years using PC's - bought a mac a couple of years back, and have never looked back. My experience is that since I've bought my Mac I've had zero computer problems - whereas when I was using window's based laptops I was constantly having problems with them.

I've found that Mac's will do everything my PC did faster, and more efficiently.

I don't consider myself trendy and I despise people who drink coffee from Starbucks...
Have you heard of GNU/Linux at all?

Which programs do you use to make your computer use more efficient? Also, what's your reason for not using a hackintosh rather than an actual Mac?

By the way, for my own amusement, I thought I'd post this from a Snow Leopard virtual machine running in VMWare on Windows 7 and AMD hardware.

To be honest, I had this discussion a few months back with Damocles in a similar thread. I've no idea what GNU/Linux is - and I totally understand that there are PC users who see Mac's as pointless and overpriced. Fair enough. But I'm happy with my computer, and as I say, for me, it's much more stable and efficient than any PC I ever owned...

I think the saying is "each to their own"...

I take it all back Billy.

Never considered the hackintosh route then? Which software do you typically use? Sorry for the interrogation. Really, I'm just curious.

I'd never heard of Hackintosh until I read this thread to be honest. As I said in my discussion with Damocles, I've got a Pro Tools set up that run off my Mac (much more stable than the PC versions). Beyond that, I use my computer for all the usual stuff - emailing, word processing, editing photographs, and storing and playing music and films.

From a business point of view, the vast majority of people in my line of work use Mac's, so since i've had one it's made my work more efficient in loads of ways. The synching of calenders on ICal is just one example.

Again, I'm sure that for everything I'm saying, you'll have a perfectly valid work around on a PC - Damocles said much the same. But I'm happy, no delighted, with what I've got. If people ask me whether I'd recommend buying a Mac, the answer would always be yes, even with the often prohibitively high price...

-- Tue Jul 06, 2010 8:05 pm --

There's no need to. I'll just be more cautious about posting my opinion about my computer in future so as not to offend any PC users.

A hackintosh is any non-Apple computer which has OS X (the Mac OS) running on it. You can run OS X, with the right know-how, on many computers. Some computers have perfect compatibility meaning there is essentially no difference between them, except that they cost less. Many netbooks will run OS X. I've got it running on my Samsung NC10. I also have OS X, like I said, running in a virtual machine on a PC. It's a Mac on the cheap and without the label. So, the only reason you wouldn't do it (assuming you know about it of course) is that you don't have the know-how, a couple of hours of your time is worth about the cost of a season ticket at Eastlands, or you want the Apple logo and looks.

Do you use iWork on your Mac?

Switched from PC to MacBook in March and will never go back. Operating system with it's ease of use and far superior build quality makes the extra punds spent well worth it. Just feels less like a disposable piece of technology.

It is magnificent how Apple achieves its superior build quality given that they use the same components as everyone else, and outsource all their manufacturing - usually to the same places used by their competitors too. I think they use magic personally. It would certainly explain the RDF.

Was thinking of investing in one of these, have always been a windows man myself. Anyone have a Mac and would you recommend it over a Windows laptop.

They cost considerably more, is it really worth that extra money or are you paying for the brand?

My friend had the same discussion with me - i told her that Mac software is the future and she hasn't looked back. Jump in and enjoy :)

I'm posting this using windows xp running on bootcamp on a macbook pro because I like the brand, it's cool and makes my cock bigger while i listen to my B&O stereo wearing my Ray Bans.

Or not.

I use a Mac and love it. It's nothing to do with the brand. It's everything to do with great quality and a smooth OS. I've used computers since the days of the ZX81 and hours of typing basic code through to vista on a high end compaq laptop. I prefer my MacBook to anything I've ever used before and will only change it to another MacBook.

I'm decided going to get a macbook, not the air or pro just the original one. With my education discount will come to just under a grand after 4gb RAM and 500gb harddrive upgrades but also comes with a free ipod touch for all students.

Thanks for all your help people, made me think twice and really look into it but I'm sold now. I'm vain and I just want to look fucking cool in the library.
