Mario made me mad when he didn't shoot, just like it probably made most humans mad, but remember; Mario is not a normal human like you and I.
His brain works differently. So far as I can tell, this is what was going on: he was showing extreme patience, waiting for the keeper to make a move. he would've shot if the goalie made a move. Then, he felt the pressure coming on and decided to eat it and take a rough tackle, which would probably get him a pen. I think Mario likes taking penalty shots almost as much as we love watching him take them. Truth be told, I think if it wasn't Mario, we might have seen a penalty given (even though in super slow-mo you can see that the defender got ball first). When you think of it this way, Mario showed two traits, one which we often praise (patience) and one which we often despise ("looking" for contact/a foul). For me it's a wash.
Of course it didn't help that his replacement came on and sprinted in on a fast break as workmanly as you like and shot it straight and true right past the keeper and into the net. Di Natale did what most players would do. It might even get him a starting spot over Mario. However, I feel as though I'm starting to at least somewhat understand Mario on a peripheral level.
Who says Euros are a waste of time!?!
