The parents had both motive (covering up an accidental death) and opportunity (discrepancies in the timeline). This has never properly been disputed.

Until proven otherwise the fact that they could be complicit in the death/disappearance of their daughter remains a possibility.

I think any parent who leaves their young child alone needs to be held accountable. Just like those who leave kids in Hot cars , or outside the pub. I’m sure they regret it and have never done it since and I feel so sorry for them. I’ve lost a daughter myself I’ve felt that despair and heartbreak so I know I’d never once take it for granted and couldn’t feel that pain again

Does not absolve those that do so from their responsibilities as parents. Regardless of the above I personally think they were pushing the boundaries of what most would think was acceptable given the age of their children and the distance and time they were away from them.

No reasonable person could disagree with what you’ve said, but they don’t deserve the hatred they receive or anything vaguely resembling it.

It is possible to think that it was bad on their part to leave their children like that and it being something you would never consider doing yourself and also be empathetic that they have had to suffer the most terrible imaginable consequences subsequently.

I think a big part of the hatred they receive is due to the massive amount of money that has been pumped into their appeals over the years. Many children go missing and some cases barely make the national news, but the fact that Gerry is apparently a Mason and strings have allegedly been pulled for him has been viewed with a lot of anger (rightly or wrongly). A sadly large amount of the public are just looking for reasons to blame and hate...

I can understand anger at the authorities to an extent for that. To them personally though, I’d pull as many strings as possible too if I was in the same situation, as would any parent I imagine.
