Maggie Thatcher

Given a choice between Margaret Thatcher and Tony Bliar, I'd take her any day.

Yes, she wasn't perfect, but some of you younger bluemooners probably don't realise what a cast iron grip the unions had on the country between 1972-78, and it should be a democratically elected government that runs it, not a few cloth cap wearing socialist worker reading commies.

I'm not against unions, many do a good job, but it really was getting out of hand by '78.

Regarding the miners, a great bunch of hard working men, the phrase lions led by donkey's spring to mind.

Like many things in life, the middle ground is usually the best option.

A little dramatic. Do you feel the same way about Tony Blair for authorising bombing raids on targets where there were civilians present, or does he wear the wrong colour rosette to attract such vitriol?
Not dramatic in the slightest and in answer to your question about Blair the war criminal......yes.

Forgive me, but ‘gladly burned her alive’ is either over dramatic or the rantings of a psychopath. We can all be a little over dramatic at times, but I doubt that a sane person would actually burn somebody alive for being an unpopular politician (in your eyes).
Unpopular politician? FFS she knowingly covered up for paedophiles in her own government and had Savile round for tea every two minutes, fucking shame on you and anyone else who holds her in high esteem.

I would have gladly burned her alive the evil paedo apologist, her wickedness had no limits.

c**t of a woman.

The thick woman was influenced by pillocks such as Joseph and Tebbit....Iron fucking lady my arse. Rusty fucking bucket woman more like.

The worst thing she did in my opinion was ruin the Tory party. She changed it from a decent one nation post WW2 concensus party to a far RWNJ libertarian lunatic front. There used to be many decent Tories who whilst i didnt agree with them, i could at least understand where they were coming from. Nowadays i struggle to name one who i would give time of day too.

Well said.

If only she could be so caring and evolved as to want to burn people alive for their crimes instead.

There's not enough petrol or matches in the world for certain people in my opinion.

I think you’ll find that Savile fooled pretty much everybody, including the Queen. The Archbishop of Canterbury and Mother Theresa. As for a ‘cover up’, it is a little soon to tell (unless of course you are privy to evidence so far not made available to the public). You may have disagreed, with her policies, assuming you were around at the time, you may have found her manner objectionable, she may have changed things that you hold dear, but to say that you would have ‘gladly burned her alive’ is extreme and dare I say, ‘over dramatic’. I find Ed Miliband objectionable, irritating, shallow and embarrassingly unconvincing. I won’t vote for him, but neither would I want to burn him alive, nor would I want to buy a music track that celebrates his death. That is probably the difference between the far left and the centre right.

Brilliantly put, Davs.
But a brilliant organiser who saw that the country we live in was fast going down the tubes. How many on here, who are commenting about Thatcher, actually lived as an adult under here terms of office? I did, and saw a country prior to her rule stricken by endless strikes, a 27% inflation rate, industries hidebound by unions hellbent on implementing a students union form of crackpot left wing ideology across industry, and the public service. Not long before, Dennis Healey had to go cap in hand to the IMF to stave off impending bankruptcy, every fucker was on strike, and we were basically in the shit.
Now, I know, Thatcher was a ruthless woman, with qualities that are anathema to a lot of people, I thought she was a domineering cow as well, but I'm firmly of the belief that she was a leader that was needed at the time. Yes, working people suffered, I'm of working class stock and saw it all around, but the industries she 'destroyed' were , in the main, coal, steel, and the resultant collapse of all industries reliant on them, but the fact is these heavy industries were heavily subsidised, it couldn't carry on, and once subsidies were withdrawn, they bowed to the pressure of competition.

I agree. Her ‘style’ was unfortunate, but the action was needed. I can remember at least one City game kicking off at 1pm on a Wednesday afternoon because power cuts due to strikes meant that it couldn’t be guaranteed that the floodlights could be switched on. She polarised opinion completely, but she did keep getting voted back in, so I think we can assume, contrary to popular belief, that she was ‘popular’. It will be a generation or two before history can judge Thatchers errors and achievements on an objective basis.

More popular than Michael Foot, Neil Kinnock and General Galtieri, I'll give you that.

Immediately prior to Galtieri's mob rocking up on the Falklands, she was the most unpopular PM since opinion polls began.
