Mahsa Amini murder and the fallout in Iran

The nurse who came to my house this morning to set up my dialysis machine for tonight is Iranian. There is a protest in Manchester tonight that she is going to against what is happening in Iran. Her husband is in complete agreement. A brave lady. I have asked her to be careful.

Are you worried that Iranian men who fled Iran are going to bring cultural enrichment to the streets mate?

To be honest, I don't know how to answer that question. I rarely go out these days, and don't have much, if any, interaction with many social groups whilst out. I go to the Etihad, a local pub, shopping, hospital visits, seeing my girls, friends and that's about it. What's "cultural enrichment to the streets" when it's at home? I'm an FOC, and Newspeak is something I'm oblivious to these days.
Live and let live is my motto - life is too short to worry about things I can't change.
(Don't know if that answers your question)
;-)

For anyone who hasn’t seen it, the Jafar Panahi movie Offside is superb.

From what I can tell, it was shot covertly and in real time in and around a World Cup qualifier. It’s about girls trying to sneak into the match disguised as boys.

Used to show this film when I taught Shia Islam. Always went down well (though a couple of Iranian pupils told me it’s a lot swearier in Farsi).

Panahi was under house arrest the last time I checked up on him but was still making films. Think I read somewhere that he managed to smuggle a film out of Iran on a USB stick that was hidden in a cake.

Another really good movie of his is Crimson Gold. It’s like the Iranian equivalent of Taxi Driver.

Asghar Farhadi is also a director worth checking out. A Separation is just mesmerising.

And for anyone wishing to get clued up about the country and its history, Michael Axworthy’s Empire of the Mind is very good.

Iranian cinema is fantastic. Particularly Abbas Kiarostami.

In my job during the pandemic they had to let go of a load of people, and the only group of people they weren't allowed to fire were Iranians, because their visa was tied to their job and it would be too dangerous for them to be sent back there.

That's as good an answer as any mate, and BTW I hope the nurse will be OK too.

Caught wind of this a couple of days ago.

Nice to see good people in this world standing up to oppressive regimes; they're amazing women and well done to the men standing with them.

I admire their bravery.
