Maine Road - the place where we dreamed

Great post Bill. My little lad is 2 and a half years old and has been to three games this season - hoping it transpires into a lifetime of memories for him when he is older!
good on you mate. I wanted to take my grandson sooner but his mum is a(armchair) rag and I had a little battle to get her to accept that some kids are born blue :)

she now understands the bond families have with city. owners, players, even dodgy goalies come and go but you me and the rest of bluemoon will still be here. I am taking him to his first away next week(I was banned from taking to barca lol ) at Burnley. he and I are buzzing for it. my dad took me around the 67/68 season, city ran out in the away kit and I booed as I thought it was Burnley taking to the field. my dad gave me a right look. serves him right, I had been dumped outside a pub with a packet of crisps and a lemonade for an hour. I didn't mind really. I'm in Dusseldorf tomorrow for the game, looking forward to it as I'm taking jess but i am more excited about Saturday.

Isn't there a plaque or something where the centre spot used to be, or did I just dream that

There's a small circle with a time capsule underneath, it's in the rough area where the whole circle was, but nowhere near the centre spot. Last time i was there it had been vandalised.

Cheers thought I'd heard there was something there

well that took me back.
it was an unbelievable journey through almost 40 years for me. I was in tears at the last game. sat where I once stood with my man and my dad from 1965 onwards. both not with us now of course but they absolutely loved city, how they afforded to take me at times i'll never know. now I take my kids (lol) and my grandson to every home game and as many away games as poss, I will saviour that for all time. we'll be in Gladbach Tuesday and I can't wait. many many families will have been exactly the same. that's city you see, its about people, sure a title win here and there is great but in truth its nothing over walking to the stadium with my grandson clutching my hand and holding on through the crowds. his face when we score is most likely just what I was like in my first season.

here's to 50 plus years for him to enjoy.
Nice post pal. Some great memories. Wish i can remember my first game but cant, would be circa 76. Catch you for a pint on Wednesday

I think the original was 55k standing, before the platt lane was seated, late fifties I think.
It was 63,000 capacity in the mid to late 1960s and that was way after the Platt Lane Stand was seated.

I never liked the Kippax as the sight lines were poor and it was hard to see a lot unless you were over 6 ft. There were columns in the wrong places.

I always preferred the North Stand and before that the old Scoreboard End.

I couldn't believe the mess Swales made of the stadium by building the new Platt Lane Stand and the new Kippax. Not only did they look naff, they didn't accommodate many people. Hence City were lumbered with a stadium holding just over 30,000 despite having some massive looking stands. Meanwhile United were expanding Old Trafford eventually up to 76,000. Very depressing.

Disappointed to hear there's no memento left, due to some utter twunt I found out I got scammed a few days ago at an apartment I booked in spinningfields as we're coming over for the Chelsea and celtic games and so have had to rebook and I'm now staying on yew tree road so was thinking of taking the lad there as I think it's only a 10 minute walk - I could only find the 'Maine Road Chippy' painted in blue on the internet search.

May 1978 six years old and Tony Book shows me and my mum around the stadium, then sat in the home dugout and finally walked onto the hallowed turf and stood in the centre circle. NEVER be another MAINE ROAD
