Maine Road

Has anyone ever wondered what would have happened if we never moved?

Maine Road was named after Maine in the US named after the Maine Law. As Manchester had a big temperance movement in 1851, so Manchester called the road Maine Road

And Maine in the USA was named after the province of Maine in Northern France, which takes its name from the River Maine that runs through it. The word Maine comes from the ‘mani’ part of the Gaulish tribal name Cenomani.

The city, Le Mans, used to be the capital of Maine (it’s in a different province now) and also gets its name from the ‘mani’ part of that Gaulish tribal name.

Trying to visualise Maine Road after all these years. Can't honestly remember any houses on the road, obviously loads of terraced street backing onto it. As you say If he went to Claremont Road Juniors he would have been near as dammit to the ground.
There were houses right across the road from the ground, if you walked through one of the alleys from whalley range high school end or turned right after turning down the road straight after the chippy across from the parkside. I’m pretty certain there’s a scene where Jimmy Grimbles footie coach/manager lived in one.

Yes facing the Platt Lane Turnstiles.

I was brought up in the estate behind the Beehive pub. I used to ‘mind cars’ and then go and stand on Kippax. Fucking shameless really.

I didn’t go to Claremont Road Junior School opposite Maine Road as we’re a catholic family. Instead I went to Bishop Bilsborrow which was on Princess Road next to the bus depot.

After Maine Road was demolished, they built a primary school where the Platt Lane stand was. They then demolished my primary school Bishop Bilsborrow and the new school on the footprint of Platt Lane was called Bishop Bilsborrow. I presume all the teachers and pupils moved.

They’ve since renamed the new school to Divine Mercy Primary and it’s on Blue Moon Way. I don’t know if that is due to local demographics or if some past history has been uncovered about Bishop Bilsborrow.

The houses at the Thornton Road end of Maine Road are still there.

I went to Claremont Rd and if I remember rightly I think the houses that were on Lloyd st where the school playing field was added were all derelict and wasteland for years beforehand?
I remember in the 70s there were houses there, on Lloyd Street. I recall a little souvenir shop too, which sold Old City programs and other memorabilia.

Hi all, I have recently read about seats from Maine Road being seen at some non-league grounds across the country. So far, I have been able to confirm that there are seats at Heywood Cricket Club, Bell Vue stadium in Rhyl, Waltham Abbey’s Capershotts ground, at Bath City FC and in Pontefract Collieries Beechnut Lane. On social media I have also read that Macclesfield FC bought some seats (yet I do not know if these are still there/were ever used) and Alfreton Town bought a turnstile and some seats, however I do not know any more about this either. A BBC article from 2003 claims that at the auction held at Maine Road, where the club sold of pieces from around the ground Norwich City, Preston North End and Stockport County were interested in larger lots, but if/what they bought is not clear. I have contacted all three but there has been no response currently.

If anybody knows anything more about any of these, or anything else relevant about pieces of Maine Road that can be seen in sporting venues today, any information would be really appreciated, as I am hoping to visit some of these places.

Thanks in advance
