Man City away shirt popular at The Hacienda (Sunday Brunch)

What was the shop on London Rd on the way to Picc Station, used to have a downstairs section with some tasty imported replica shirts when such things were rare- St Etienne was one, Argentina, Monaco (?). Mid 80s , might have been a Le Coq Sportif thing?

Hurleys.

I used to like the QPR blue and white hooped airtex top. Very smart.

It wasn't that one it was the purple one with yellow stripes. I had it back in the day.

Never recall seeing any local football tops in the Hac and I was a twice a week regular from 1988 to about 1993. My missus at the time did used to wear an old St Etienne top of mine occasionally it was velvety with the SuperTele logo and LeCoq Sportif, I had it from about 1982, she also got my vintage Ajax top too. Think that St Etienne top became quite popular, as the band was around at the time, and it was mint

They used to do brilliant fireworks as well, down in the basement

Saw it too, interesting but I call bollocks on some of it though, claims footy shirts didn't come popular till 90's. I was wearing the city saab shirt in about 1985,so were alot of people.

Football sort of reinvented itself after Italia 90. Gazza's tears, England doing well before losing in cruel circumstances, English teams moving towards readmission to Europe all helped, and with the Manchester music scene being as cool as fuck at the time it wasn't really a surprise that our replica shirts started taking off. I moved to London in 1990 and remember wearing that candy stripe shirt with particular pride.

Don't ever remember the hacienda bouncers letting in any football tops. He was right about the 1992 away top (purple striped one) as I took mine to Ibiza that summer and there were quiet a few. Even a couple of lads from Scotland who didn't even like football but bought the top because it was cool.
