Manchester City fans are becoming embarrassing.

I fail to see the logic in anyone's argument about maine rd being all fluffy and nice. We never ever booooed the team, always stood behind our chairmen, the kippax never smelled of piss, we never moaned about relegation, we even formed a guard of honour when steve coppell left and never once wished for just one minute, helen would stop ringing that fucking bell!

Now we are on to it, mars bars were bigger, a 10p mix up from the paper shop on claremont rd could give you diabetes, the summers were longer and there was no such thing as hugging a hoodie!

Yes please someone build me a time machine, to get me back to those wonderfull, carefree times when negativity at a football match, was just a christmas special episode of tomorrow's world!

Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeze!

That's just sepia-tinged nostalgic rubbish mate, with respect.

I tell you now there was a damn sight more moaning back in the day, not less. Now I started going in 76 so I can't comment on before that, but back then the likes of Joe Corrigan and Paul Power had there lives made a misery for them by the crowd - and we were top of the league. The team would be booed off at half time and fulltime, and the "Main STand Moaners" were a standing joke at City. My Dad tells me they were just as vociferious the season we won the league.

In the 80s and 90s, the ground was a foaming sea of nastiness many matchdays. Everyone moaned - it was part of the club culture. The players were scared to play at home. There were demos outside the Main STand. We called for the Chairman's HEad. We called for the manager's head. We called for players to be sacked and told them they weren't fit to wear the shirt.

It's a walk in the park these days. There have always been a few idiots, like at any big City club, but the vast majority are hugely supportive. I honestly think forums have skewed people's perepective on this.
A shock for me to read a Didsbury post I 100% agree with.

This is exactly my experience of watching City over the years. I well remember the stick we gave Power before he left for everton. Understandably in many ways, City's fans were very disillusioned in the 80s and 90s.

City fans showed their true colours in the late 90s when the club needed them, but we were renowned before them to be the away teams best asset. Frustrate City for 20 mins and turn the crowd on the players. Happened week after week

Fucking hell! That just gave me shivers! I couldn't put it any better myself.

Dibble left the field in tears after a couple of fuck ups at the end of a game in 97-98 where I think Paul Beesley was culpable as well. I want to say Notts County but I'm not sure.

Paul fucking Beesley.....how far we've come.

I thought it was Dibble. He ballsed 2, maybe even 3 up. My memory says Oxford but I can only remember feeling sorry for him. The crowd did a sarcastic cheer next time he picked it up.

I've heard huge roars go up when players were subbed too. I've never joined in any of that stuff.

When we were good in the late seventies it was common knowledge in football that that was how to beat City at home. It was openly discussed, and 20 minutes was the figure used.

At risk of busting the myth, in the late 90s we were worse. Remember Willie Donachie's outburst?

The support only started when we started winning games, although we certainyl turned out in numbers.

Dave

You are correct that the abuse was much worse in the 80's and 90's.

However to some extent we all got caught up in that. I have never boo'd the team or any individual per se but at the time we all felt powerless as our club appeared to slip into terminal decline as we had to watch others prosper, and that manifested itself in negativity in varying forms. At one time the gap was so great between us and the top of English football I personally felt it was inconceivable that we would ever catch up.

I, and many others felt the thing we loved was dying in front of our eyes and there was nothing we could do.

What I (and I suspect many others) cannot understand is why there seems to be so much vitriol still coming from some quarters to the extent it is. Why can't so many fans seem to just enjoy the ride, because what is happening now is what we all dreamed of 12 years ago, and it is happening. Right now.

Frankly any City fan who can't enjoy life now should probably think about finding something new in their life.

It's not the new breed of fans who let us down, it's the old guard.

For all the moaning and griping I hear about Dzeko and the likes, it's the regulars and the old trouts that do all the sniping. The kids are fine.

Let's not pretend that City fans have always been different. I've been there and seen the utterly disgraceful treatment that our 'wonderful' support gave to Ian Bowyer, Joe Corrigan, Paul Power, Kevin Bond, Adrian Heath and Richard Edghill.

And Gordon Davies!

This is spot on DD.

I cringe when I think of some of the abuse players have had to endure down the years from some City fans.

Blaming it on 'nouveau' fans is a red-herring.

City have always had their fair share of negative dicks who ruin the game for all of those who have to sit near them.

They're still doing it now to Milner and Vieira for example.

Agree with this totally, I'm under the impression a lot of 'fans' are only happy with something or someone to moan about, maybe it's a defence mechanism so they don't get let down. Vieira was the target near me before Sundays game and then he's great after it. Some of them should put their brain in gear before opening their gobs.
