surprised there is no permanent thread for tactical discussion so decided to start one. in my opinion tactics in modern football overtook the the importance of individual players ever since the victory of italy in 2006 WC and the evolution was complete by pep guardiola in 2009. it was created to thwart the influence of individual player with superior skill simultaneously getting the best of the team. since then no player like the maradonas zidanes and henrys have been able to take over the football field. now u might say messi but even him would not be as effective playing in any other team like his NT form would suggest. in essence the sum has become greater than the sum of the individual parts.
i look forward for the knowledgeable ones in BM to enlighten us rest about what u think of the tactics employed by our team and how effective it is?

Our manager is tactically naieve.

He messes about with his team selections for no apparent reason. In the Premier League we have been blistering with a front 4 of:

Aguero

Sterling Silva Navas

So why oh why does he change it totally. Ok Aguero is injured which only leaves Bony to take Kuns place.

But no he then totally changes the formation, Silva out to the right wing, and Nasri brought in. This meant we lost the excellent work rate of Navas protecting his full back. Pogba wouldn't have had the time to sling his cross in if Navas had been on the pitch.

Unfortunately I always feel with our manager that whatever we achieve this season will be inspite of him being the manager and not because of him being the manager.

We will see what "tinkering" he does for Saturdays game. The old saying is never change a winning team, well unfortunately he had to change Kun as he was injured but why start with Nasri is beyond me.

Unfortunately he never learns from his mistakes, we'll probably set up 4-4-2 on Saturday when this great sequence of winning games has been achieved by playing 4-5-1. Sighs!!!

Sorry mate cannot agree. Irrespective of what tactics, formations or player selection there will be someone caling him out. We have done pretty good under his management and because we lose a game, these threads start.

Messing about with selections for no apparent reason is a statement made by those who don't necessarily have all the facts as to why. I have no idea why he set us up last night like he did, but I acknowledge he is best placed to do that.

I also suspect that had we put our good chances away last night, this debate wouldn't be happening.

What happened last night was due to poor finishing only.

I think the more glaring issue was his substitutions, how many times has the Yaya, Silva, Nasri combo become predictable, slow and flacid against compact teams? He decided to bring off Sterling, who didnt play good at all but was the only willing runner in behind, so you had KDB, Silva, Yaya, Nasri and Bony, all players who play in front of the defence, too easy for Juve.

Had we have put those early chances away, the subs may have been totally different. Just saying mate it appears too easy to blame the manager when we lose a game. If we had created zilch, I could see your argument

Ye I agree there, wasted chances was the main issue but the time came when we needed a change and Pellegrini made it too easy for Juve, can't deny this either. I personally think Nasri is futile for us in Europe, we have Silva, no time for compensation, we need direct, pacy attackers who have the will to put it all in, every game, defence and attack. So from now on, I will have gripes with Pellegrini if Nasri starts over KDB or Sterling or Silva ( is that even possible)

Over the years I have learned that having the right attitude and work ethic/rate is THE most important thing in football, IE you can achieve an awful lot with 4-4-2 of hard working (Good enough) players who play for each other and the emblem on their shirt. You can play whatever tactics you want against that team, it wont win in its own right.
