Maybe this was a premeditated move. Mancini isn't that clever, but the board of directors are.....

It needs to be a confrontation....Mancini has struggled to keep Mario in line his whole career and since he's gotten here, Balotelli claims he's making changes and going to put his best foot forward, then he goes and acts like an asshole in the match. Mancini has to find a way to harness/control Balotelli or he'll never be more than a guy who occasionally does something sublime and hurts his team the rest of the time otherwise

Mancini made it a confrontation, he could have left it and dealt with it in the dressing room in private then if he didn't get the response he wanted to hear, then send someone else on in his place for the second half.
Everything could have been done behind closed doors, but mancini chose not to.

What's the difference? Scream at him in the locker room and you've still angered the crazy sonofabitch. He's so off his rocker I doubt the increased media scrutiny matter, and by doing it immediately you at least send a VERY clear and direct message.

The problem with what Mario did isn't that he tried to backheel a goal and wasted a great opportunity in the process, it's that you can't trust him not to do the same thing or something equally ridiculous in the Champs Lge against Madrid. It's just a part of Mancini's continuing need to make Balotelli more of the player we need him to be, which is proving to be an astonishingly difficult thing to do.
