Women's football today is played by women who played girls football 15 years ago. 15 years before that there was virtually no women's football and virtually no girls football either. The increase in the popularity of women's football is a direct result of a huge expansion, at grass roots level and with minimal support from the FA, of girls football in the late 90s and early years of this century.

There is a very simple point that many girls who played the game at school or club level as kids may not play any more now they have kids and jobs and mortgages but are interested in the game still and would be particularly interested in women's football. Quite why anyone would decide that a sport that interests many who played the game themselves up to a certain point should be excluded from media coverage on quality grounds that don't apply to coverage of lower league and non English teams is beyond me.

My point was women's football seems to be exempt from those quality grounds which apply to lower leagues and non English teams. It exists in a world where goalkeepers have no idea what they're doing (I know that sounds like a gross generalization but after watching highlights of the last World Cup, I can't see how anyone could disagree), and noone who covers the game is allowed to acknowledge that.

As I said, I don't think we'll agree and I see it as a bit of a charade for the reasons I've already stated but I don't object to women's football itself obviously - just the attention around it. Maybe they should give the women's game smaller nets/pitches - it would help it distinguish itself from the men's game with a different style and would help it look less amateurish.

smaller nets and pitches ffs
I hope to hell that was a wind up and not what you really think

It's a perfectly reasonable suggestions Karen - afterall, the rules of tennis are handicapped for women so why not make adjustments to football?

Because they don't need it,they are fit enough to play 90mins on a normal size pitch and they score some great goals in the normal size nets
The standard of football needs to be improved and that will come in time

I was more thinking it would help GKs dominate their box (ahem) and stop the embarrassing mistakes which seem to happen a couple of times per game.

On that logic the men's game needs smaller nets as well :)

It would be ridiculous to expect women's football to be as skilful as men's at the current time. Far fewer women play the game, it hasn't really been established very long. Skill levels in sports are strongly correlated to levels of participation. Nobody would expect the male Andorra football team to be as skilful as Spain. But, whereas Andorra will never get closer to Spain, no matter how many Euro's they compete in, skill levels in women's football will improve as participation levels increase.

Looking forward to seeing how we get on. And glad its getting a bit of media coverage too.

Some rubbish on here. In tennis the only hanicap women get is that they need to play two sets where the gents sometimes play 3.
As to stop the embarrassing mistakes, you got to be kidding. Haven't you been watching our own Joe Hart in the first few months this season? I witness howlers by goalkeepers every week for that matter, at the highest level. And very few can actually command their area. So: rubbish.

I'm sure we will all support the ladies as we do every youth team, no matter the standards. I will for sure and I'm actually looking foreward to see MCWFC play their trade at the highest level in the new Etihad Campus stadium.

Hart during his bad patch was only making one howler per game - and his mistakes were nowhere near as bad as the ones you see in every women's game :)

I see plenty of gk howlers in non-league games. Shall we give them small nets too? Let them play with the big-boy equipment when they turn professional?
