The Manchester Low Emission Zone is set to Start on the 22nd of May 2022. I understand Vans, Taxis HGVs and Busses will have to pay a charge if they do not meet emissions compliance. Private cars are to be exempt but charges will no doubt follow for these as is the way.

Firstly, its hard to argue against wanting to improve air quality in City Centres, But unlike London Manchester doesn't have a well funded integrated public transport system to take up commuter slack, also the vehicles above cant use public transport, which seems a little at odds with the aim?

Secondly is this not just a congestion charge in all but name, a congestion charge that people voted against?

The issue I see is if there isn't an alternative or people cant afford the alternative then surely this is just another local tax.

And who will ultimately pay for the charges on Hgv's delivering goods, buses getting people to work and vans doing repairs......us the very people that said no to the congestion charge.
Perhaps the plumber can carry his tools on an overcrowded tram ?

It will apply across all 10 boroughs of GM to non compliant vehicles, I have two vans, one is exempt the other is not so £10 a day on top of the recent increase in fuel makes it a lot tougher to earn a living.

Birmingham operates a CAZ (Clean Air Zone) which is £8 a day for non compliant vehicles like vans but it applies in the City Centre only. I can’t help feeling the GM charge is just another tax on those easily targeted, some of the barm pot schemes the Council’s dish out to will be happy.

It’s a bloody con, they say you can get a grant of around £5k to update to euro 6 emission standards yet there is no way to do that on LGVs so they want you to buy a new van, so what’s that £30k. There are thousands who don’t know anything about this do come 2023( they are giving you 18 months grace) it’s £3650 a year to win a non euro6 van! Give it 3 years and it will be cars as well. They’ve done it in London and Birmingham already and it’s scandalous.
What should happen is that if you own it at the time you are exempt however on change of ownership then you incur the charge. If you are coming into GMC then you get charged but living inside you shouldn’t be getting charged. Certainly not until the have the public transport system and infrastructure for electric charging.

We have five vans none are compliant so we will have to try and absorb the costs or pass them on ? We cant afford to change any currently. Seems ill thought out at best and just another tax revenue at worst. Thank you Andy Burnham!

Precisely.

I was looking at getting a VW camper but these are also affected by it. Would essentially mean paying £10 a day to get to work as I planned on using as my main vehicle. Holding off until nearer the time now as I expect the price of them to drop quite a bit on the back of it coming in. I’ll just buy a shitty petrol car as a runaround.

i was talking to a builder who it effects having an older van said he'll just pay fines as in last few years of work so cheaper than purchasing new van and the devalue that will incurre

I’ve registered to try and get a grant to replace my non compliant van, for preventative maintenance the cam belt needs replacing shortly but that £600 so I’m holding off until I get news of how much I could possibly get towards a replacement vehicle.

here’s the link:
