Manchester Low Emission Zone

People who are only driving themselves to their place of work, or those who just drive for leisure, should be the ones most heavily hit. These people should be using public transport and walking/cycling.

I know load of people who live three miles or less from where they work who drive to-and-from work every day, the lazy sods!

Those who drive for a living or have loads of equipment, tools or goods that need taking to their work destinations should be the ones who need the roads and need the roads more traffic free. They’re the key road users who are being held up in traffic by lazy buggers who won’t get up half an hour earlier and walk/cycle to work or jump on a bus.

I do agree that their engines/vans need updating to be more air friendly, but they should be given kore time to get ready for it (not everyone can save up enough for a work van by May) and they aren’t the people who should be punished with this.

I also think that any car users who live on a bus route road where they have off-road parking, but choose to park on the road, should have to pay a tax to park on the road. They slow public transport down and it’s extremely annoying when you’re sat on a stationary bus because some arsehole can’t be arsed driving that extra 15 feet into his driveway and is blocking the bus route.

Frustrating as we already pay enough in council tax for not much value other than having bins emptied once a month.

Public transport is pretty toss around Manchester and expensive for the service they provide. I don't always drink and sometimes drive in to town on nights out as it is safer or when collecting the Mrs etc.

I'm afraid Green initiatives will be an excuse to increase tax and revenue for the government. Fine but use the revenue to invest in infrastructure to improve green initiatives and EVs.
The govt doesn’t gain any revenue from any of our taxes. Not much of our taxes go towards and govt spending neither. Almost all of our taxes go towards paying the deficit every year.

The deficit for last year was £323bn and the govt only brought in £375bn from taxes and NI contributions. Govt public spending was £1,115bn last year.

Our car hating council taking an alternative but innevitable line after the gongestion charge rebuff.
Our council should hate cars, they contribute to a Manchester having some of the poorest air quality in the whole of Europe.

The shit thing is, they provide some horrendous alternatives to cars. We have a public transport system that I would rate as poor to unacceptably poor; and certainly unacceptably slow.

I’d like to know the answers to a few basic questions.

When did this get voted on?
Who voted for it?
Who set it at this level?
What does the money raised go towards?

it’s a fucking joke.

Oh, and I love a bit of street clutter. Yet more road signs. I swear I saw one the other day stating ‘new road layout for social distancing’ or words to that effect. What the fuck does that even mean??? As it was in Ashton, some jobsworths at a Tameside council no doubt came up with that one.

"Contribute" - but look how clean most cars are now compared to last century.

The only times these days that I switch the car to circulate, or have to hold my nose as I walk past - are buses (although they too are improving) and old taxis. So maybe the councol are on the right lines, but suspect it's a roundabout way of getting to cars.

Not only in towns and cities though - there is a B road between Robin Hoods Bay and Ruswarp which has a 90 deg bend - at that bend there are three C roads that meet that go onto the moor to a small hamlet or even nowhere. As you approach you have the sharp bend B/W chevrons. destination signs, narrow road signs, no overtaking signs, give way signs and a no entry - as you pass there are about 15 or 16 road signs visible from the drivers seat - thats a lot to take in at 50-60mph as you approach. And thats on a moorland road in the middle of nowhere - overkill doesn't get near to describing it

All this whining. What do people suggest you do? Air quality in Manchester is p1ss poor, mostly caused by congestion. Buses are slow because they are being held up by people who don’t really need to use their car/van etc but do. My experience of public transport is generally good just a bit slow so I factor in the xtra time to take it. We are all aware that global warming is a factor then how do you suggest we combat it? More people should be walking/cycling etc not just because of global warming etc but because it is healthier - we have one of the most obese populations in the world. You have to start somewhere. Get vehicles off the road is a start, makes it safer to cycle and walk. You have to start somewhere.
