Tell me if I am wrong as I am certainly no tactics expert but last night it looked to me that Yaya was playing further back than Barry to negate the threat of Rooney and especially the strong running of Wellbeck. Barry meanwhile got in the faces of Carrick and Giggs and in a slightly more advanced role hit the Ball into the feet of Silva,Nasri,Tevez in a much quicker fashion than we see with Yaya's languid style. I dont think we have seen it before and it worked a treat.

I make no great claims for my tactical awareness and, quite frankly, I often get caught up in just watching the game; especially a tense Derby.

I think we have seen Barry do that sort of role recently but not sure if that was alongside Garcia.

It was noticeable that Barry got on the ball a lot more in the opposing half than his own, whilst Yaya did have plenty of touches in his own half.

Couldn't say if Yaya was sitting deeper specifically to counter Rooney. I thin part of the reason may have been that you can give him the ball when he is being pressed and he will usually retain possession and can muscle his way out of trouble if closed down quickly.

A lot of people don't seem too keen on Yaya sat back there but I like him in that role; albeit he can occasionally be a bit too languid defensively and I do recall cursing him for that at one point.

Yaya and Barry owned the midfield though last night.

What I did like was that we went back to 4-2-3-1 and kept a good shape. Nasri, who gets a lot of stick was very disciplined in working back on his flank as was Milner but you expect nothing less from Jimmy.

Barry's success was down to them using Englands greatest striker as a man marker for Yaya, Shreks whole MO was to stifle Yayas gallops forward and to an extent it worked, however Barry pushed on, pressed high and we got the joy we deserved,,,,,, those fuckers who applauded baconface for going all out are deluded swineflu slags - the very fact rooney was used in that capacity said it all, they know our midfield is superior yet they didn't have the tools to combat it...... tick 'fucking' tock!!!!!

This is a good point. I don't understand what the some of the match reports talked about when they mentioned how well the rags played. They just defended and tried to get a counter goal. We played like the home team while they like the away.

RM did seem to know the rags will be pressing high up the pitch and Yaya would be much better at quick distribution with the back four than Barry. The rags will have had instructions to try and hold Yaya which left Barry in much more space to operate and do his thing. In effect Yaya drew their forward line out, stretched their midfield and created more space between the lines and down the flanks.

RM seems to have the upper hand against the rags everytime we play them.

Hilarious any how that the Rags at home with the sort of points cushion that meant they were free to have a real go at us were left mainly to play kick and run (slight exaggeration) counter stuff.

United play right into the hands of Mancini's tactics, it's the stuff a manager dreams of with his biggest rivals doing that. They leave acres of space in the midfield which is exactly what we thrive on and which unfortunately we don't get much of anymore from the rest of the league. All the space we have against United is incredible, we could hammer them repeatedly if we were a little more ruthless and efficient. Even the 3-2 this season, we were the much better side but they were just ridiculously clinical. If the entire league offered us these luxuries we would piss it, unfortunately most teams pack defence and midfield and play narrow, and that is Mancini's real problem as he is finding it difficult to overcome that leading to so many dropped points against your QPRs, West Hams, Stokes, etc.

Bob nailed it last night to his credit. We seem to find playing against the rags easier than we do Everton! 2 wins v the rags at their place yet 2 loses v the bluenose dippers over last two seasons. Football's a funny old game.

I thought the team played exceptionally and United did exactly what they did last season at our place in aiming to nullify. They managed a goal but they went out not to lose rather than setting out to win.

Zin had it right saying about Rooney. Baconface really is dropping bollocks by putting a leash on their best player. They're more dangerous when he roams. Anyway, happy as a pig in shit. Roll on Wembley!

I agree with LoveCity,
They played straight into our hands but Mancini still had to get it right.

I would also agree that we struggle with packed midfields and defences but to be fair to Mancini he has craved a world class winger for the past two years and he hasn't got one. You can say we don't need a world class winger to beat the likes of Stoke but Chelsea, rags and arguably Arsenal all have top wingers not just a decent player like Sinclair.

Mancini has also tried to adapt a 352 which is what theoretically should work against a team packed with defenders and midfielders. Unfortunately it hasn't really worked but is that down to the players not wanting to play it or Mancini not integrating it properly?

Unless fitness issues prevent it, and assuming Kun is still not ready for 90 minutes, I'd start exactly to same side against Chelsea. Tevez likes a goal against Chelsea.
