i would call him a natural.
he seems to have a positive effect. the players must look at the moyes incident and think, fair enough, it hurts you to lose, but you don't hide it, you stand up and fight. and, by apologising immediately on the telly he comes across as the nice guy, the smart, decent, responsible guy.
and the hints about Juve might have served a purpose. they might respect him for not just saying what everyone wants to hear. and a lot of them might relate to him about feeling uncertain about his future. so they start to feel they're all in the same boat, and the only thing to do is to get together and fight for fourth.
I think he's a very very confident person. not arrogant, but there seems no doubt in his mind about what he wants. it might be hard for them to understand every last detail he wants from them. but at least he's not sending out mixed or vague signals, what he says in the interviews is very focused and consistent. concentration. fight. If someone told me that's what they wanted, I would get it. show courage and determination, and above all, concentrate. things anyone can understand and relate to.
however if "someone" said, 'obviously the intensity of our play was not there', that's vague. how do I become 'intense'? love affairs are intense. what is intensity of play? is it something technical or something mental, or a bit of both. it's not obvious at all.
another thing... he never speaks about the opponent, except to pay them the usual respect. what I'm saying is, I never get the impression that he is trying to excuse a loss by saying, well, they made it difficult for us by doing such and such, or it's a difficult place to come. he can't control what they do. the team can't ever hope for an opponent to not do X or Y. he's giving the impression that all we should be worried about is our own performance... it gives the impression that he really believes, if we follow the plan well enough, we should win every game. that gives confidence to the players. he's always focused on the team and our performance, where we go from here, not what the press are going to say about him in the morning.
I am eulogising a bit, I just really like his leadership style. It's obvious that the main thing he wants from all his players is to listen to him. I'm sure it doesn't work as well on everyone, but I know that I want to understand exactly what he's thinking, because he appears confident and clear that he has certain ideas, and that they will work. who knows, maybe it won't work. But I can't help wanting to find out.
