If Brighton wont go down from their ridiculous £50m price tag its time to move on. £50m would make him the most expensive LB of all time in football, and he wouldnt even be a regular starter here. The guy has one good season in a mid table PL team ffs. Just go get Sosa or whoever, will do just fine and are probably just as good anyway. Worked out just fine when Napoli wanted a 100m and for Koulibaly and we had to ”settle” with Dias. Only loser here is Cucurella who is being denied a once in a lifetime dream move.

Theoretical.

It’s a stupid price because he’s had one good season. The last time we spent that much on a full-back it was a disaster (Mendy - on and off the pitch). Wan Bissaka was a disaster at that price. For £50m + you should be looking at the best around. Cucurella is an above average PL left back coming off an excellent season. Yes he could be really good with the right coaching but so could players who are much cheaper.

Ake is a better and far far far more established player than Cucurella. Aké has 27 caps, has 2 PL titles, 2 EFL cups, a Europa League title, 7 years of PL experience, and is home grown. Walker was a 4 time TOTS inclusion and was England’s starting right back.
Cucurella has 1 cap. One year of PL experience. Never been in a tots anywhere. And a completely empty medal drawer (other than a Copa del Rey he appeared once in).

Zinchenko was £30m so maybe you should tell me how you think Cucu is nearly 2x as good (he’s not).

Team accomplishments have very little to do with player valuation. That should be just so obvious. Otherwise we'd have massively overpaid for almost every single player ever as our usual profile is signing up and coming young players from teams not at the top of the pyramid.

50M also won't get you the best around unless you want older players. If you look at top young fullbacks in the world like Alexander Arnold, Davies then 50M simply won't do it. 50M gets you good promising fullbacks looking at market in last few years, that's how much we have paid earlier and that's around how much united paid for Martinez, Chelsea for Chilwell recently for example. Man City don't have a monopoly on player valuation, all these prices have to be considered when coming up with a valuation.

I'd also say any player we are looking to sign should be better than Zinchenko and I'm sure that's what our target is. Player valuation isn't linear, the better the player the steeper the increase in price. For example Neymar isn't 5 times better than Mahrez but he for sure is better.

We currently find ourselves haggling over 10million for a LB who could have been scouted a year earlier. With all our Spanish/La Masia connections why wasn't Cucurella scouted before going to Brighton.

If the price really is £50m just pay the money. It's ridiculous. Sure, it's a slight overpay but the season is starting and we have a massive hole in our otherwise excellent squad in a year which could be Pep's last and we're trying to win everything. We've just made a record amount of sales (including selling a player at this position) and we're shooting ourselves in the foot to save £5m? Dumb.

It's not the £5m we might save now, its the £5m clubs will tack on to every transfer knowing we'll fold every time.

If we weren't willing to pay close to their asking price, which was established 6 weeks ago, why wait until the eve of the season to walk away?

We are now without a left back for the first few games of the season, at least.

This is really poor from us.

Except for the best LB in the league last year.
