I seem to recollect the rag fans running the length of the pitch and charging us in the Scoreboard End. Obviously there was scrapping but I think it settled down without major incident.

Contrary to some reports, they've always been c**ts.

Anyone remember the City v rags cricket match at the OT cricket ground around the same time? I jest not - a "friendly" cricket match! The ragtards invaded the pitch after being bowled out and tried to storm the City end. They were repelled by a hail of bottles.

Did I mention they've always been c**ts?

P.S. City won the cricket too!

Completely wrong year mate.Yes I was there for the 1-3 game and saw no fighting, but then again I was sat in the main stand.I was at OT for the cricket game and that is correct.Plenty of agro that day all around the ground plus the pitch invasion.
It just isn`t cricket is it ?

Whoops. I do remember the attempted invasion of the Scoreboard End and that was defo 1968, on our way to the title.

The pitch invasion may well have been a different year. Apologies for the confusion.

You'll have to excuse my failing faculties but at least the cricketing reminiscences have been corroborated! It was one of only two cricket matches I ever attended.

Yes mate I was also there when the pitch invasion took place which was "Denis`s Backheel" which sent the fuckers down.Me and my mate were in the Paddock in front of the new stand which had been built for the World Cup (IIRC).
You couldn`t beat the good old days. But we did on a regular occurrence, home and away.Just like of late.

March 1968!!! You old bastards, I wasn't born for another 16 months.
I do like reading and hearing the stories from our more mature blues from that era tho...

Were our songs made up by six year olds in those days?

I was there that night, I was 17 years of age and it was the first time I had seen City beat United, I do not remember any trouble. What I do remember was being so happy for weeks, followed by the trip to Newcastle for the title winning game.

I was behind the goal in the scoreboard end and I remember the cops going into the crowd with truncheons drawn and using them. Not sure what the trouble was maybe pushing and shoving or throwing stuff, but I do remember one fan being clumped with a truncheon ( the pics are on here somewhere).

I'll never forget that night also there was a rousing chant of City, City, City, that went round the ground, there were a lot of Blues there that night.

The original game which was postponed due to snow on the pitch was absolute horseshit, the rags were scared stiff and didn't want to play that day.

I didn't make the cricket game, I think it was a Sunday morning but I remember my mate at the time telling me Buzzer came out in his all whites wearing black socks.

I have a vague recollection of seeing some grainy TV pics of the goals, but maybe my memory's playing tricks with me. I remember being at home and there was an anouncement on Granada after the match, giving the derby score in an advert break. It definitely wasn't a match of the day or anything like that type of feature, but, maybe some of you might have a similar recollection.
Maybe it was just still pictures flashed up on Granada Reports, or North West tonight, or something.
I was only 11, and too young to go, so I know nothing about any crowd trouble. My eldest brother - a red - was in the Stretford End. I used to speak to him back then - not anymore though.

I think it was just b&w pics of the major incidents, I seem to recall one of Colin Bell being stretchered off and the amazing sight of George Heslop scoring!

I was down to go on the original Saturday date but the weather caused a postponement and my parents wouldn't let me go to the rearranged night game even though I went regularly to night matches at Maine Rd. I can't recall much mention of trouble at school the following day but then the rags were very quiet!

The derby I remember for trouble from that era was a night time testimonial (for Bill Foulkes maybe?) - it kicked off big style on Warwick Rd and Chester Rd after the match.

I was at Billy Foulkes testimonial,Lancs Blue, and can confirm that it kicked off big style along Chester Road and all the way back into town and along Deansgate.
I particularly remember the big mob of blues I was walking back with being charged by police horses, which to a 13 year old seemed a bit of an over reaction at the time, but there was a lot of damage done to office, shop and car windows that night, and they were just trying to re-establish some kind of order on the streets.

Thanks for confirming that my memory hasn't quite gone yet! I was heading in the opposite direction towards Sale so didn't see all the trouble towards town. I'm still not sure why there was so much aggravation after a testimonial, yes there'd been the odd bit of bother at other derbies around that time but nothing like that. Perhaps it just signalled the start of the "hooligan era"of the 70s?
