March 1968. United 1-3 City. Crowd trouble?

Played football on the Sunday and some council moron had laid quick lime as pitch markings. It rained that afternoon and as I got in the shower in my full kit to start with (it was cold ) The lime started to burn. Straight to Hope Hospital for treatment, looked like a mummy. Monday, rang work cant come for a couple of weeks ,poorly sick . Went to the game that Wednesday on crutches ,still had bits of shirt, shorts and socks stuck to me. Four mates surrounded me to stop anyone touching me. Left with a couple of mins to go. Hobbling towards the station, couple of rags walked past and a roar went up. "We've equalised " they screamed. Shit I thought. Only on the train back with Blues chanting did I realise. Which is why I would love to see Frannies pen.
Spotted at the game by a rag I worked with. Sacked a couple of days later. Barsteward did me a favour, hated that job.

Didn't go to the 3-1 in 68 but have vivid memories of the cricket riot. Younger fans don't realise how the rags have always been total scum. For me the Law backheel match was the worst but I couldn't stop laughing outside..even after being punched in the face by a thug. Another hairy night was the aftermath of the League Cup 4-0 in 76 (when King Colin was injured) A rag moron spat in my face and headbutted me. It always makes me laugh when modern-day supporters complain about Munich songs etc. They have no idea how bitter the rivalry was in the 60s and 70s. If they had seen what we saw then they might take a different view.

100% agree with every word that you have written here Bobby Owen. Not only did I have clashes and scuffles with reds at derby matches back in those days between 1970 and 1980,but on buses, pubs, clubs and the streets of central Manchester whenever I happened to be wearing a City scarf or badge.
I even had a run in with a gang of them in Crumpsall when helping my Dad on his milk round one Saturday morning- we had to threaten them with milk bottles before they would back off.

I don't recall any trouble at that match at all. I was stood at the corner near to the Stretford End. I was with a group of work colleagues mostly United fans. It was great to see them skwirm.

The 0-1, Denis Law match, on the other hand there was plenty of trouble!

I once got a punch on a weekday afternoon during my lunchbreak (doing my summer job) in that pub next to Salford Market because I had a small City badge on. I was a student aged 18 and the scumbag who hit me was in his 30s. I grew up in Withington so Salford was always bandit country to me!

Yup. It's not true what some say on another thread: that the hate started in Bacon's reign. There was plenty in the 60s and 70s too. The Kippax was a war zone on derby day, with bottle throwing and a procession of people with head wounds being led away for treatment.

I've had an update from family and friends who attended this game. By all accounts Rags moved round the ground to attempt to ambush City fans leaving via the various steps and tunnels from what was then the open away end. But they were swept aside by delirious Blues.

I was 7 at the time and my uncle took me straight after school, we met a tout outside the ground at around 4pm and my uncle paid a small fortune for 2 tickets in the new seated stand close to the corner of the Stretford end, when Best scored after about 40 seconds I looked round at my uncle and he was in tears and he just kept on saying "ive paid all that money for this" I will never forget that night and the effect it had on me as a new young blue, looking across at the sea of sky blue in the scoreboard end was breathtaking and lives with me to this day, as well as the glum rags faces that were sat around us both that night who after 40 seconds were so quick to take the piss out of my uncle Frank, guess who was laughin 90 mins later ! RIP uncle Frank and thanks for the memory x

November 12th, 1975 was the date. It lives long in my memory.
