Manchester City are set to abandon their pursuit of Marco Reus after being given indication that the player would prefer a summer move to Real Madrid, Goal understands.

City's interest in the Germany international dates back to the summer of 2013 after Reus' scintillating form helped guide Borussia Dortmund to the Champions League final.

Txiki Begiristain, Manchester City's director of football, has maintained close contact with the Bundesliga club and until recently had been given the impression that Reus was keen on the idea of joining the current Premier League champions.

"City are particularly disappointed with the latest update on Reus," a source told Goal. "The club have put a serious amount of groundwork in on this deal but just as with Mario Gotze and Robert Lewandowski they are now pretty much resigned to losing out."

Reus has been an equally long-term target of Real Madrid, who are considering making the former Borussia Monchengladbach star their headline purchase in the summer.

Bayern Munich also harbour interest in the forward, although Dortmund are keen not to allow Pep Guariola's side to complete a hat-trick of high-profile signings following the defections of Gotze and Lewandowski, while they also issued a statement last week denying the Bundesliga champions had first option on the player.

Reus has also not ruled out the possibility of staying with Dortmund should Jurgen Klopp's side qualify for the Champions League despite a poor start to the season.

Despite Manchester City's emergence as a genuine force domestically and, potentially, abroad they continue to struggle to land the majority of their A-list transfer targets with Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Isco and Alexis Sanchez all having snubbed City interest over the course of the last few transfer windows.

City are hopeful that the opening of the new £200 million Etihad Campus, allied to their growing stature in Europe, likely to be enhanced further by qualification for the knockout stages of the Champion League, would help in attracting star names to the club but they appear to have missed out on Reus.

Sergio Aguero and David Silva signed new long-term contracts in the summer but the club continues to press ahead with ambitious plans to boost Manuel Pellegrini's attacking options for next season.

Reus and Everton's Ross Barkley are the names at the top of the Chilean’s wish-list, while the club also harbour ambitious plans to tempt Lionel Messi from Barcelona.

Edin Dzeko and Stevan Jovetic are on the radar of several Serie A clubs and their sales could help fund the purchase of a stellar arrival, while Yaya Toure and Samir Nasri have both spoken recently about their futures potentially lying elsewhere.

Disappointing news if true but there are other targets we can go for in the summer.

well this is sad. FFP really did us over, we shouldve had Sanchez.

Cuadrado isnt A-list though, is he?

well if he goes to real, someone will leave. Take your pick, Isco, Bale, Ronaldo. The last one will go to Ushited but the rest I will be confident we can sign.

worth while to unsettle Sanchez while we are at it.

Always going to be second in line behind Real regardless of FFP unfortunately. It's very important we get a Sanchez/Hazard/Reus type player this summer though. No half measures either, we need someone that good.

Surely RM cannot keep all happy? I'd like to think Bale would be the one to make way and im confident we could tempt him here.If not,Sanchez would be my alternative.

What bullocks? Who cares about what Dortmund wants in that story. Reus has a release clause - that means that the only contact you have to have is with his agent or Reus himself.

And it was his agent and Bayern who have given statements, that they do not have any contact with each other...

Making up stuff and not having the necessary knowledge...

A shame if true and goal now get all dibs on city stories. Bale would be an amazing signing though! I feel we now have to sign a biggy to compete with the best and show everyone we are going to challenge for the biggest honours.

I'm still not sure Bale fits in with a highly technical team - If Real Madrid were to already consider him surplus to requirement after making him the most expensive transfer in history that's a big loss even for them. Still, some people are just well suited to this league. I'm sure he would still win us more than a few points on his own.

Hart
Zab
Vinny
Mangala
Kurwaza
Fernandihno
pogba
Koke
Silva
Bale
Aguero

I could live with that!!! ;-)
