when the taiban observe the geneva convention then I might just be tempted to give a shit

until then

meh

Then it's a good job that folk like you have no bearing whatsoever on what actually happens in the real world.
'Let's act precisely like the barbarians we stand against'.
Mind-blowing logic.
And the ideal way to win hearts and minds.

The voice of reason!
I do find myself agreeing with NF quite a lot in threads such as this. As he's a self confessed ****, I think I must be one also.

Shocking huh!

Are you watching this NF ??? last time we had this topic you called all Soldiers Murderer's IIRC and subsequently got banned, nice to see a balanced account of this for a change.

I'm pretty sure I have never called all soldiers murderers, as that is just nonsense.
Not that I don't post nonsense on occasion, but this would be unchartered territory even for me.
The subsequent banning almost certainly happened, but then that isn't an unusual denouement for me.
As others have said, he is clearly both - a military court has convicted him of murder, therefore he is a murderer, but then there is a valid argument that a combination of army training and his own experiences in the theatre of war drove him to act as he did.
Perhaps surprisingly to you, I have a degree of sympathy for him - war is an odd environment in which conventional morality takes a back seat to survival, and you can take the life of another and end up getting a medal, whereas in civvy street you would be looking at a mandatory life stretch.
My view is that he needs to be punished for his crime - that shows those we are in combat against that we do not tolerate cold blooded murder, and puts us on a higher moral footing, and sets a precedent for others.
That said, I hope he is receiving all the counselling and psychological help he needs to sort his head out so that when he is released he can begin to rebuild his life.
There are no winners in this sad situation other than the British army, who deserve credit for bringing him to trial, where a whitewash or cover-up would have been easier and more politically expedient.

In certain aspects I agree but no man has the right to take another man's life no matter of the stress or duress they were under.

Why did this ever come to court?

A Taliban fighter is killed, who really gives a fuck? He only put him out of his misery.

These soldiers are out there, risking their lives every single day. Taliban cowards blowing their mates up and there is uproar when one of these twats is killed?

Put a gun in someone's hand and then complain when they kill someone?

Logic?

War is totally fucked, you can't judge someone's state of mind, or expect them to act 'rationally'.

so you think that they are 'barbarians' ?

yet we apparently need to win the hearts and minds of such barbarians?

mind-blowing logic

good job that folk like you don't actually influence what actually happens in the real world

Bit hypocritical to train someone to be a cold blooded killer and then convict them for answering to the instincts you're brainwashed them with.
But then again that's just my opinion.
Pacifist me. Politics aren't worth killing people over. Nor is religion.
Imo.

Try to imagine how tense the situation is when you are constantly on alert, you see one of the enemy that has been shooting at you lying injured, what would you do? Yeah me I'd probably shoot him dead too just to make sure I was safe. So no I don't think he should have been tried for murder. He was a soldier at war in active combat
Then you too would be a murderer just as the Marine is...

He was the enemy - thought when you were at war the idea was to win?

It is love but there's still a code of conduct in which to do such, for example you're not supposed to shoot a designated medic no matter what side they they are on. At least the British military did the right thing here.

the lad is a hero, disgrace that he is imprisoned. do the taliban fight to the rules of the geneva convention, do they not kill innocents?

girls didn t go to school in afgan a few yrs ago, yes they were banned by the taliban. eye for an eye

They're not trained to be "cold blooded killers" though. I know loads of people in the army who wouldn't just kill someone for the hell of it. The army will always attract the odd few fuck heads which is why they really need to have better screening before giving them a gun.

"An eye for an eye" doesn't resolve anything, it makes both sides as bad as each other.

The idea is to make everyone behave like moral human beings, not everyone behave like animals & hopefully the side we're on wins.
