Mario Gomez

He reminds me of the fat lad who turns up to five-a-side, stands upfront all game, does nothing but scores a hatful.

Terrible footballer, tremendous finisher. Not a City player.
My personal opinion is that if we had a player who was a terrible footballer but a tremendous finisher, we would have won the league last season.

Exactly that, if we had a natural finisher like Gomez in our side last season, we wouldn't have dropped so many points.

Like Dzeko?

Gomez is a far better finisher than Dzeko. Plus Gomez is not a fairy. I am not saying I would like Gomez, I am just stating a clinical finisher is all we were missing last year as far as the league is concerned.

Dzeko does too much of his work outside the box, now whether that is the managers fault or the way he plays I don't know. Too often last season we were crying out for someone to just get in where it hurts.

Agreed. Dzeko's biggest problems were when he played anything outside of the box. Maybe that was managerial influence, maybe Dzeko getting too confident, or maybe it was out of necessity. With an even stronger midfield this season.. and finally using the wings (i.e. Navas) for God's sake.. someone who isn't a ball handler (Dzeko or Gomez) won't need to do much else. Just play the box and finish. Since 2010 I've thought there is no better poacher in the game than Mario Gomez. Even last season when he played 2nd fiddle to Manduzukic.
He brings a different presence to the front than the Argentinian flair we already posses. Gomez would do well with the team it looks like we're building.

For the record, #1 on my list is Cavani. But if he's a no, I'd be content with Gomez. Over Dzeko in the least.

Mario Gomez is a goal machine. A fox in the box player. Having said that, he offers little else unlike say aguero/tevez.

If we play 4-2-2-2 then this is great because hell sit there in the box scoring for fun.

If we play 4-3-3 it will be like playing 4-3-2 with him basically invisible. Just not going to work.

If we play 4-2-3-1 it could work as he showed for bayern and Germany. This would require a lot of support from the three behind to work the ball into him though. It would also push aguero back, so then we just aren't getting the best from our best attacker

All point considered I would say great signing if the price is right.

I would not be suprised if Gomez was the fall back option if we fail to land Cavani.

Nope, more likely we would keep Dzeko or sign an under the radar type signing if we don't sign Cavani.

Gomez is a very good finisher but plz don't forget that he missed some important scoring opportunities against Real and Chelsea last year (semi-finals and finals, respectively). So, it's not like he is a sure thing if it is about capitalize on opportunities in important games.

You are complaining about Dzeko's working outside of the box? You should be glad to have such a striker. Gomez can disappear for the whole game without any usage for the team...you cannot afford that against top competitors. Just spend a look at the half-finals against Italy in the EC 2012.
Iirc, Dzeko always was a working striker (seen him at Wolfsburg). You will need such a type if you want to have a good working closing-down.

Don't forget that scoring in a team with Robben, Müller and Ribery isn't very difficult. Anyone can do this.

I think this applied to all our strikers, at times, last season
