Mark Hughes.... Did it seem right??

Didn't mind Hughes too much. He worked well with Marwood and Cooke and he had a good eye for players and made some fantastic signings: Zabaleta, Kompany, Wright-Phillips, Tevez, Adebayor, Lescott, Barry, de Jong, Kolo Touré, Given, Bellamy, Vieira…

There was a culture at the club that lived on until probably Fernandinho left just two years ago. I’m not necessarily saying it was the culture that Hughes built, more that his eye for certain players that he brought in allowed those players to build that culture.

Kompany, de Jong and Vieira brought in a toughness to City that lasted over a decade.

There were some great games n’all, notably against Arsenal:

And Robinho.

Let’s remember Hughes didn’t buy those players. The board did. We bought any mercenary player we could get our hands on to try and lift ourselves into the top 4. When we finally did it, it opened the doors to a more stable type of great player.
