Martin Demichelis (continued)

Just watched the full 97 minutes of City v Newcastle last Jan. MDM was outstanding. The analysis that suggests MDM was crap early in the season and brilliant late on is simplistic. Swallowed by all the pundits and commentators way too easily. Unfortunately by a number of City fans too.

MDM was outstanding for most of last season. He may have made some errors, peno ve wigan, red card v Barca. But even then, he was having a great game up to the red card. The game against Newcastle, he shows all the qualities that we think of when we think of late season MDM: imperious in the air; good distribution (good, not great); quick to intercept; and overall reading of the game first class. Yesterday, I watched the league cup final again. Same story, despite the ridiculous attempts by Neville to pin MDM as the big weakness in our make-up.

The narrative of a bad MDM early on in the season and a good MDM late in the season is simplistic. Simplistic, and wrong.

and people were too quick to blame him for Vinnie mistakes as well, the Cup Final and Barca being prime examples of that.

MDM also had a very solid game vs Chelsea away and I think Joe's run of
mistakes knocked the confidence of the defence.

I don't agree with your analysis of the goal against Barca since It was asking a lot for Vinny to anticipate Jesus losing possession and the ref not giving a free kick (who had blown for minor fouls throughout the first half. Kompany was at fault against Sunderland but it was only 1 or 2 loons on here who blamed MDM.

Correct. The bandwagon effect can never be under-estimated. On here at least as much as elsewhere.

He shows you don't need blistering pace to be a top CB. As long as you have a good footballing brain. He has often been unfairly criticised but is usually one of our most consistent performers.
