Me too mate, I wanted to see Hagler knocked out, and it wasn't for any dislike of the lad or belief he didn't belong, it was purely because he was the only boxer I'd ever seen that I actually thought couldn't be knocked out, he was that tough !As I got older I felt guilty about wanting Leonard to beat him.
I think there will always be debate as to who was the best mate, and rightly so, even many of the fights between them weren't definitive, much subjectivity, and the fight between Hagler and Leonard, well I think Hugh Mcillvenney summed it up best, but one thing is certain, no matter which boxer you thought was the best, if you asked the question who they most feared, I bet Marvin's name would be the one mentioned nine hundred and ninety nine times out of a thousand !I was really into Boxing when he was in his prime. I could never quite decide who was my favourite fighter in that division, Leonard, Hearns, Duran or Hagler. Couldn't decide then and still can't. Sad news though, so relatively young too.
Probably the saddest thing I've ever seen in boxing that Johnny, I always remember seeing Johnny's interviews and thinking what a lovely , sweet lad he was, he was so shy and obviously didn't like the limelight, but a real gentle man.Yep, read that. There are so many great boxing books out there. “Hugh Mcillvenney (sp?) on boxing “ is prob my all time fave. Eamonn Magee’s autobiography is a brutal but brilliant read, as is Mike Tyson’s. The Big If about Johnny Owen is superb. Dark Trade, Raging Bull, the list is endless.
I remember watching his last interview the night before his fight and went to bed really hoping he would win, at that time, more than any other fighter I knew, I wanted a win for him, so to wake up in the morning and see the scenes of his lifeless body being carried out and being spat on, things thrown and abuse hurled at him by the crowd, to see Pintor leaping around without a care in the world for Johnny's well being knowing he was in serious trouble, you know, for years after that, I spent so much time (too much time) hoping Lupe Pintor suffered some serious serious harm every time he fought.
