Without knowing too much about the situation, when was the last time there was stability in the middle east? I'm 50 and can remember news about arrafat or Houmani (sps) now call me old mr old fasioned bollox if you will but 40 years of that sort of govenance is much more likely to be the cause of a lot of its woes. Is the latest conflict there really to blame (serious question i admit ignorance in the first line) or is it just another reason to blame the west for a non functional corrupt govenance over many decades?

So we lost 457 soldiers in Afghanistan, the US lost over 7000 since 9/11.. some kind of retribution !!

I knew of those British Soldiers, Chris Grey, his Dad Paul and Mum Helen had their lives turned upside down, Chris is just a statistic but the reality is devastating.

No not really as it’s a huge country with many different tribes or factions. Best just left to their own devices. Forcing ‘democracy’ onto a population never seems to end well and personally doesn’t seem very democratic.

I use the Newsnow aggregator for City news. They are asking for donations for Afghanistan on the basis of a humanitarian crisis. I have donated some money but feel sickened that the US UK and others spent billions on this war. They up and leave, and the poor people are left destitute relying on charities to help them. Where on earth is the sense in this ? Same happened in Iraq, WMD etc.
I used to have such a strong belief in Western democracy, but my beliefs are really now pushed to the limits.

so whats a better system than western democracy?

US formula for invading a nation. With us tagging along

1. Invade destroy or disband most infrastructure
2. Appoint someone to rule the place who is linked, maybe an exilced or son of an exiled local, these will normally have lived in the west their whole life and know fuckall about the country at alocal level.
3. Dish out contracts to companies of your own nation for the rebuild, even though those companies don't really give a fuck about it.
4. Refuse to engage any local groups that may have been linked or known those you disposed, be mistrustful and vague.
5. Ignore the new governments corruption and failure to address issues that caused the last regiem to take power
6. Watch your lack of understanding of the region lead to societal breakdown amd insurgencies
7. Fuck off normally embarrasingly leaving it as bad or worse a place to be in as when you arrived.
