Mata vs Silva (Who would you pick)

Back to Mata v Silva - Mata can shoot, and scores goals with shots from outside the box, something Silva never does (Nor many other City players for that mata, sorry, matter!).
You can realy only compare them based on currrent form and my vote goes to Mata, at least until Silva regains the edge he had in the first half of last season - let's hope we see it again soon.

Mata scores lots of goals and creates chances, love Spanish Dave and his eye for a killer ball but he has no confidence in front of goal and lacks power in his shot.

Looking at this thread, I can only say that some people should actually watch football instead of racking up assist and goal stats which mean nothing.

One has to actually see how Silva's elegance and vista completely redefines our game, the speed at which it is played, the one-touch football, the options that are taken by every player when they have the ball because they know silva's in the team and how that diversification of play confuses the opposition.

At the end of the day, half of the time, an assist is just a ball given to striker who does most of the job. Sometimes, the through ball is the penultimate pass, which is followed by a simple lateral pass, and the later one is considered assist. How does that make sense?
Dani Alves has 50+ assists, most of the time Iniesta/Xavi giving him a through ball and him passing it to messi thanks to the spaces opened by that pass. And then you have Messi fanboys claiming Alves has more assists for Messi than Iniesta, hence Messi is not dependant on Iniesta. It also is the same stats fanatics who claim that Ronaldo would deserve the Ballon d'or ahead of Iniesta because he has more goals and assists.

To me, Silva is the best midfielder in the Premier League and, in his own style, he is among the most creative to ever have played in it. It is laughable argument to say Gio was better than him because he was a better dribbler and striker. I, for one, don't like comparing players that are so much different but, if you have to, then the argument can't just be about stats and some fancy actions.

Mata has certainly been better this season imo. In terms of who is better overall, that's a tough one but I think Mata is still improving so he might become better.

He certainly used to be able to shoot with power.

Think Dave may be suffering from something similar to me. 2 years ago my foot/ankle totally went and took a very long time to heal. Since that day I've never been able to leather a ball, that confidence just isn't there.

Stats certainly aren't the whole story but you need some measure of productivity or we're stuck in this subjective, abstract idea of "natural skill and talent". These flowery descriptions of Silva's "vision, artistry and magic" are all well and good, and even true, but they still don't compare to Mata's sheer productivity for Chelsea. That is what the stats illustrate. Mata is just the more productive player. He orchestrates Chelsea's attack just as much as Silva does City's and so far this season he's been doing a much better job of it.

I think Silva is supremely talented. I watched him many times in his pomp last year and he was breathtaking. If he played for Barca he'd be hyped up a lot more than he is. But for all his raw talent, he doesn't outperform Mata where it counts.

Mata is a dead ball specialist, Silva isn't:

Mata can finish like a striker, Silva can't:

Silva's close control is magnetic, but Mata stands up to him and can run through tight defences at speed:

Anyway enough gifs or the page will get ridiculous. My point is that not only does Mata have more to his game, but he does it more consistently. Abstract notions of raw talent aside, Mata is far more productive, and consequently (for me) more valuable as a player. Biased though we both may be, I'd rather have tangible evidence to compare them by than abstracts like "elegance" and "vision".
