Match Discussion - Chelsea (A) - 05/09/25 - WSL

Bit unfortunate really, considering the amount of shots we had against Chelseas total .... but goals win games, and we just didn't get enough of them, in fact I don't think we even scored our own!!

Two poor pieces of City defending for both Chelsea goals too ....

Chuck what looks to be two lengthly injuries into the mix, and it's not been a great night for City women .... still, their absences will give other squad members chances, so hopefully things might improve.

Pretty much a par result - Chelsea are +1 goal better than us.

I felt the key to this season would be how long it would take to come up with a defensive formation that works. We can't keep conceding 2 goals per game.

It's safe to say that Greenwood at left back was not the answer.

Not a regular watcher, so grain of salt needed, but why don't they just play 70-80 minutes.

It was similar in the euros, where they were dead on their feet and injuries abound as soon as it got past a certain time.

Not sure if it is normal for Shaw but I've seen spiceheads kick their own shadow with more accuracy.

Yes, good idea. I'd vote for that.

Let's make women's swimming 75 metre sprints, same as 75 metre sprints in athletics.

How about a 3/4 marathon?

Anyone...?

Shaw, first game of the season missed a couple of close efforts. I mean, let's bin off the golden boot winner for the last seasons, shall we...???

FFS...

Just listening to the post match with Jeglertz and when asked for an update on the availability of Kerolin, Knaak and Fujino and if they’re out for a while he said “I can’t say weeks but some of them will be coming back soon”

So make of that what you will

Said on comms that we restricted Chelsea to their fewest chances created in about 4 years The good news is that we're not going to be playing them every week. I think this game will be an eye opener for what the WSL can be like for the new signings. Thought Lohman was very good and worked well in a midfield duo with Yui but was less effective after the yollow card (fully deserved) and probably why she was substituted. Kind of surprised me that Yui was the one pushing forwards more and next weeks team selection will be interesting to see how Clinton fits in to this dynamic.

One more positive: Thought LBB's cameo looked good. Carried the ball progressively and looked confident in doing so. Hope it's a sign of things to come if we can get her the playing time.

I'm just worried that Lohmann's game that allows Hasegawa to push up, create and get shots off (unlucky not to have 2 goals herself) will be lost having Blindkilde Brown as the AM when Hasegawa is also on the pitch.

Both have interesting factions to their game, Hasegawa noted already, but Blindkilde Brown's pace and energy in midfield (not as creative or goal threatening) is also eye-catching. I guess it depends out what the manager wants from the midfield.

I suspect Clinton will be used to a Rodri type effect, allowing the AM to push forward.

I honestly thought we played well. Chelsea were lucky in the second half that they scored with pretty much their only major chance - Greenwood really poor for both goals and looks like she's got zero pace in her. Hopefully she won't be targeted by fast wingers all season.

Plenty of rust up front for us, which is to be expected after the injuries and time out some of the players have had.

Definitely didn't deserve to lose that

Really disappointed with that result as I thought Chelsea were there for the taking with the players they had injured.

On the plus side, thought we held our own with new signings and a new coach. We're only going to get better too.

Off that performance i feel like my concerns around using Greenwood as a leftback were confirmed. And especially if Hemp isn't in front of her to provide that extra bit of protection. I dont see the point in losing her as a world class LB in order to play her as in a position she is less comfortable in. Sure she wont be up against Ellie Carpenter (who was worryingly good) every week, but she will be targeted there if we keep using her like that. She isn't a marauding and pacy LB. I dunno why we didnt just go out and get one!

We need Bunny back firing on all cylinders asap too. But we have a couple of games to get settled in and find our groove before we play Arsenal at the Joie. And we will really need to win that.

Same old same old from our Women's Team. Lost to Chelsea - again. Multiple players already out injured - again. 2 more injured during the game - again. After 1 game of the season they are effectively playing for 3rd spot - again. Nothing really changes with them does it?

With the injuries - I think there's an issue club wide, not just the women's team. Something is going on in training, no way should all our players be dropping like flies for the past 18 months. Is there an intensity issue in training?

I ummed and ahed about mentioning LBB - because nobody else had mentioned it, but I thought she looked very positive too.

Thankfully there aren't too many Ellie Carpenters around too.

Having slept on it I agree, that was quite positive all-in-all.

Annoying that we left Park go at a time when Fowler, Fujino and Kerolin are all out as she could have then played in her preferred position. Pity that we couldn't have done the deal back in January and swapped Kelly instead.

When everybody's fit (stop laughing) I don't know how we structure our defence as I've said elsewhere we really could do with slotting Bex in there, purely because of her goal threat from set pieces. Since signing in January, despite missing a chunk of fixtures she's something like our 3rd highest goalscorer in that period.

I think Bunny was fine for her first game for five months. We've got Spurs in two weeks, and she likes a goal or two against them!

I'd agree with all of this - I have high hopes for the midfield set up with Clinton coming in and LBB looking a very good alternative to the first 3. In fact until Aoba, Mary or Kerolin are fully fit I would go with having a midfield 3 with only one out and out wide player - this gives the new players time to understand their teammates and what the manager wants to do.

This would be my front six which would make us a lot stronger and also still retain goal threats (Grace scored 9 last year & I think Yui is capable of more goals wise, showed that last night). With Viv and Lauren being mobile across the front we would be hard to defend against.

Lohmann - Yui - Clinton

Hemp - Bunny - Viv

Don't know what to say about the defence until Rose and Knapp have had a run but having an extra body in front of them can only help.

Same could be said re the finishing as both men and women teams are just nowhere near clinical enough re scoring.

Must be the case that Kerolin and Fujino aren't that badly injured. And we also have Beney too who im guessing will come into the side next week after Murphy's injury. Not sure.wjy we didn't just put Beney straight in but I'll have to trust the coach's opinion on that for now
