Match Discussion - Chelsea (A) - 05/09/25 - WSL

Did you actually watch it, or just assume that (or read some of the shite the media write) ?

We outplayed them second half, played some very good football, and it was nothing like the last 3 seasons playing wise.
We always outplay Chelsea, even when we went down to 10/9 players in the 23/24 season

When she fans going to start calling the management out for not signing world-class players. Chelsea and Arsenal are competing for transfer records, where is City? You're never going to able to compete with Arsenal and Chelsea if you keep signing average players

It appears that you're already doing it

Not sure why we need to be calling them out, we have one of the best CF in world football, one of the best wingers, one of the best midfielders in the world (just signed a new contarct), and we ae bringing through some talented players of our own.

You don't have to spend big money to get the best players, chelsea are a bit of a joke, just accumalting players, some of who won't get regular football, arsenal badly needed to strengthen both their team and squad.

I think we've brought in good players to do a job, I liked what I saw last night in the combo of all of the above.

There’s something to be said for our scouting system too.

Going out spending big money on players doesn’t always guarantee sustained success. Building a foundation of young promising players and adding quite cleverly to that in the transfer market is the way to go. I think people are forgetting (like the poster you’re responding to) of coups like bringing Miedema to the club. Without a doubt she’ll be one of our highest earners at the club and highest earners in the WSL. Sure, we got her on a free but we’re paying big money and you don’t sign the likes of Miedema or renewing the contracts of Hemp and Hasegawa without the will to spend big money.

The fact is there are very few positions in our squad that we could look at and go “we need to spend big on this position” because we’ve got quality throughout. The only position we could have done that for is LB but who’s to say we didn’t try to achieve a major signing for big money for LB but was knocked back because of our lack of champions league football?

I think the people claiming we don’t spend money don’t actually know very much about our squad at all

I think a lot just love to complain sadly.

I think we've a good squad, and it will compete with the best (as shown in this game), last year was severely hampered by injury to key players, lets hope this doesn't follow suit. The injury to Greenwood can happen to anyone in football , at any time, and the injury to Lily Murphy was a freak fall, but the management can't do anything about that.

Why did we not bring a sub on for Lily ? Commentary said we'd used all our subs, but we only used 3, chelsea used 4, some other stupid rule I don't know about ?

Eerily similar feel to the men's team in regards to signings.....

It's the same as the men I'd guess.

The commentary was wrong: we'd use all of our sub "slots" - you're allowed 3 during the match and half time. So as our 3 subs came on at individual times during the second half we couldn't use anymore.

Thanks, that is ridiculous when a team suffers a serious injury like that.

Easily the most ridiculous rule these idiots have come up with

Consequence of the 5 subs rule from memory. They quickly realised that clubs were using all 5 subs to slow/break up the game when they were winning. So introduced the sub 'slots' to ensure there'd be no more than 3 breakages in play late on in games

They could have just stuck with the "you go off to the nearest side of the pitch when being subbed, and walk around the outside of the pitch". Problem solved. They create these weird rules that don't help every season

Shaw absolutely should have scored on her second chance of the first half. That was a terrible miss. She had the entire far side of net to go for--or she could have simply lofted the ball up and over a sliding Hampton--and instead she shoots low and right at Hampton at the near side. You simply can't miss chances like that in games like this. And this is something I've observed with Shaw: I'm a fan of her play, she's great, and she scores a lot of goals--but she also MISSES a lot of good chances.

On Chelsea's first goal, Rose simply did not put in enough effort to catch up with Beever-Jones, IMO. She saw Beever-Jonese dashing for the goal, and she surely realized it could be a dangerous situation, and, to me, she looked a little slack in getting even with B-J to prevent her from getting a shot off. It's the little things that Chelsea always do and City always fail to do. Margins are small in games like this. You can't afford mistakes.

Just watched a replay of 'our' goal. Just before the free kick is taken, the ref calls over Bunny & Charles to warn them about something (holding?) and when they go back into position Charles swaps with the player marking Prior.

Yeah I watched it. And they lost, again.

Nothing changes with our Womens Team; they clearly are already playing for 3rd spot and a chance to scrape into the CL. They might win one of the domestic Cups if the draw falls right for them, and assuming some of the players can stay fit, but thats a very big "if" indeed.

Outplayed them for parts of the 2nd half but there was an inevitability about how that game unfolded, and the result itself. Considering the resources and facilities of the Club and the supposed commitment to winning, to win 1 League title in the past 10 years with those simply isnt good enough. Maybe Clinton sparks something in them, who knows, but they remain miles off Chelsea and Arsenal and these days have slipped behind that horrible lot in Stretford too. I admire your positive outlook but I just dont see it Im afraid.
