In the Chelsea game, when Costa scored the first, he was in an offside position when Willian took the ball off Lescott. He was onside when Willian passed to him for the goal but surely he was gaining an advantage when he was offside in the first place?

Not offside PB.

To be seeking an advantage the ball has to come back off the goal frame, goalkeeper save (deliberate or not) or via a deflection from an opponent (i.e. not deliberately playing ball).

Quite often you see a player deliberately run offside in order to drag a defender with him then the ball is played in and someone with a later run benefits. Or in another case the ball then gets slipped through for a wide man and he's behind the ball when it's crossed.

Yes I get your point, by deliberately running offside you are really cheating in the spirit of what offside should be.

Van horsey used to do this often when a lump up the field was coming. The ball would then be played to someone else. It confuses the Lino too as they have to judge who is going for the ball.
