Stupid from the ref, more like. The ball was out of play according to the linesman, so how can Alvarez be deemed to have kicked it away?

He's clearly kicked it away. He hasn't twatted it 20 yards, but he's clearly knocked it away from the pitch. They're going to be really anal about this for the first few weeks of the season.
