Trying to work out whether it's for unsportsmanlike conduct (disobeying an order from the ref) or trying to gain an unfair advantage (in effect, cheating) ? Still baffled by it.

Not sure it can be either, despite what that fat c*nt ex ref says. Nothing in the rules of football to say you have to wait for the whistle before taking a free kick, so goal can't be chalked off and you can't be booked. Unless somebody can post the rule that proves me wrong!
