Why would the referee deserve a kicking for following the rules of the game?

They are supposed to wait until the play has stopped to blow for offside for exactly this reason.

Agreed. In a different universe we would have had a totally legit goal ruled out for a wrong call on the offside and be fuming. If anything VAR corrected Masseys mistake. Two people at fault there, Massey and WBA players knowing how VAR works on offsides.
