Give me your theory then because my grandad was attending games from the 30s onwards.
He compared at nightclubs and used the word ‘rags’ liberally, even to rags.
And using ‘rubbing rags’ as a reference makes no sense as they can be any colour. Whereas the saying “like a red rag to a bull’ has been used to describe annoying fuckers for centuries.
The were so poor they were literally playing in rags, until city came forward with a new kit for them

It’s got nothing to do with rubbing. They’re called ‘the rags’ because they wear red and they’re annoying.
As per the phrase “like a red rag to a bull” a reference to a bullfighter waving a red rag at a bull to annoy it.

It seems that the historical and actual meaning of the word ‘rags’ in the context of united, is generally poorly understood and some people make some comical guesses.
One of my daughters once asked me if calling united the ‘rags’ was a reference to a ladies monthly cycle.
I was tempted to say yes but I’m a fair minded bloke so I put her right on the topic.
Sorry mate, you're a bit off beam there.

When they didn't have a pot to piss in their shirts had holes in them, hence u****d fans nicknamed them the rags and it stuck.
